It helps you cut meat easily during a meal. Many steak knives have a wood handle. Some also have a serrated edge. This means the blade has tiny teeth. These teeth help the knife cut through steak.

In the past, people had to polish their knives often. This was a lot of work. After World War I, people used stainless steel. This metal does not need much polish. After World War II, new knives became very popular. These knives used serrated edges. They did not need frequent sharpening. In the 1950s, a new way to treat steel was found. This helped knives stay sharp without teeth. But many people still liked the serrated style. In Europe, some people use a Laguiole knife. This is a small knife from France. In many parts of Asia and Africa, knives stay in the kitchen. People use spoons, chopsticks, or their hands at the table instead.
