Stavanger is a major city and municipality located in southwest Norway.

The city's history is a cycle of economic booms and recessions. The first traces of settlement in the region date back roughly 10,000 years. Historians suggest North-Jæren was a military and economic center by the 9th or 10th centuries. Stavanger officially counts its founding year as 1125. This date marks the completion of the Stavanger Cathedral.
Religion played a massive role in the city's early development. Throughout the Middle Ages, Stavanger functioned as a major church city. The bishop, canons, and monasteries were significant landowners. However, the Protestant Reformation in 1536 changed everything. The king confiscated the estates and properties of the monastery and the bishop. This caused a decline in the city's religious influence and revenue. The relocation of the bishopric to Kristiansand in the early 17th century further shifted the region's power.
Economic shifts later defined the city's character. In the 19th century, rich herring fisheries gave Stavanger new life. This period helped the city move past its religious decline. Later, the shipping, shipbuilding, and fish canning industries became the main economic drivers.
A massive turning point arrived in 1969. This was the year oil was discovered in the North Sea.

Stavanger offers a high quality of life for its residents. In 2020, ECA International rated it the most liveable city for European expatriates in Norway. It also ranked 5th in all of Europe. The unemployment rate has remained very low for a long time. In August 2022, the rate was only 1.6%, which is much lower than the European average. However, the city is also known for being expensive. It frequently appears on lists of the most expensive cities in the world.
The local climate is influenced strongly by the sea. This maritime influence makes the weather very mild by Nordic standards. Winters usually stay above freezing, and long heat waves are rare. While rainfall is common, it is less frequent than in areas further north on the coast. For travelers, Stavanger Airport, Sola, provides easy access to Europe.
