States' rights

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The United States has a big government. It also has many small state governments. The Constitution says they share some powers. But some powers belong only to the states. These are called states' rights.

Sometimes the two sides fight. One side says the big government is in charge. The other side wants to make its own rules. This led to many big arguments.

One fight was about trade taxes. The South wanted different rules than the North. This caused a big crisis.

Later, people fought about slavery. This led to a great war. Both sides used the idea of states' rights. It was a very hard time for the land.
