It is a military science fiction franchise. This means it tells stories about space battles and advanced technology. The series was created by Chris Metzen and James Phinney. They worked for a company called Blizzard Entertainment. The stories happen in a part of the Milky Way galaxy. This area is called the Koprulu Sector. It is a place where different groups of living things fight for control.

In this galaxy, four different groups live and fight. First, there are the Terrans. These are humans who are very mobile and can adapt to many things. Next are the Zerg. They are insect-like creatures that are always evolving and changing. Then there are the Protoss. They are a powerful and mysterious group of beings. Finally, there are the Xel'Naga. These are godlike beings who created the other races long ago. The Zerg and Protoss were actually made by the Xel'Naga through experiments. These experiments went wrong and caused much trouble for the creators.

Making these games involves many steps and many years. Blizzard Entertainment began planning the first game in 1995. The team used a modified engine from an older game called Warcraft II. When the game first came out in 1998, it changed how stories were told. It used high-quality cinematics, which are short films, to show the story. Later, the team made an expansion pack called Brood War. They also worked on a game called StarCraft II. This included three parts: Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void.

The series focuses on a galactic struggle for dominance. This conflict takes place in the Koprulu Sector of the Milky Way galaxy. The franchise includes several video games, eight novelizations, and a board game. It also features licensed merchandise like collectible statues and toys. The series is famous for its deep storytelling and strategic gameplay.

The story is driven by the interaction of four distinct species. The Terrans are highly mobile and adaptable humans. The Zerg are insectoid creatures that are constantly evolving. The Protoss are a powerful and enigmatic race of beings. Finally, the Xel'Naga are godlike creators of the other races.

Millennia ago, the Xel'Naga genetically engineered the Protoss and the Zerg. They were attempting to create pure beings through these experiments. However, these efforts backfired, and the Zerg eventually destroyed much of the Xel'Naga.

The central conflict involves complex political and biological motivations. Centuries before the games, the United Earth Directorate (UED) began a colonization program. Due to a computer malfunction, the Terran colonists were sent far off course. They ended up near Protoss space, isolated from Earth. The Protoss watched the Terrans with interest while keeping their presence hidden. Meanwhile, the Zerg sought to assimilate the Terrans to gain their psionic potential. This forced the Protoss to destroy tainted colonies to stop the Zerg infestation.

In the original StarCraft, the Terran Confederacy falls into chaos. Rebel leader Arcturus Mengsk uses Zerg attacks to destroy the Confederate capital, Tarsonis. Mengsk then declares himself emperor of the new Terran Dominion. During this chaos, Mengsk betrays his second-in-command, Sarah Kerrigan, to the Zerg. This betrayal causes Jim Raynor to desert the movement. The war expands as the Zerg Overmind attempts to invade the Protoss homeworld, Aiur. The conflict concludes with the death of the Overmind during a massive assault.

The expansion, Brood War, deepens the political intrigue within the sector. The Protoss attempt to evacuate to the world of Shakuras. However, Sarah Kerrigan manipulates them to further her own power. During this time, the UED arrives to conquer the Terran Dominion. Kerrigan eventually forms alliances to defeat the UED fleet. She ultimately secures full control over the Zerg Swarm. This era established the series as a benchmark for real-time strategy games.

StarCraft II expanded the saga through three major installments. Wings of Liberty follows Jim Raynor as he tries to overthrow Mengsk. He discovers a Xel'Naga artifact that can restore Sarah Kerrigan's humanity. Heart of the Swarm focuses on Kerrigan's quest for revenge against the Dominion. She travels to Zerus to regain her power as the Queen of Blades. Finally, Legacy of the Void deals with the return of the dark entity Amon. The Protoss must unite their tribes to reclaim Aiur and banish Amon to the Void.

The commercial and cultural impact of the franchise is enormous. By June 2007, the original game and Brood War sold nearly 10 million copies. By the end of 2017, the franchise's lifetime revenue exceeded $1 billion.

The series is a cultural phenomenon in South Korea. There, professional players compete in televised matches with sponsorships and teams. The franchise also holds four Guinness World Records from 2008. In 2006, it was honored with a star on the Walk of Game.

StarCraft connects gaming with professional sports and cinematic storytelling. Blizzard used the series to establish a dedicated film department. They introduced high-quality cinematics that became integral to the narrative experience. The series also demonstrates the evolution of game technology. The first game used a modified Warcraft II engine. Later, Blizzard released StarCraft: Remastered with updated graphics and audio. This allows new players to experience the classic story with modern visual clarity.
