Stanisław I Leszczyński was a prominent European figure during the 18th century. He held several important titles throughout his long life. He served twice as the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. He was also the Prince of Deux-Ponts and the Duke of Bar and Lorraine. His life was defined by the complex politics of the Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This era involved many powerful neighboring countries competing for influence. His story shows how leadership and diplomacy shaped the map of Europe.

His first rise to power occurred during the Great Northern War. This conflict involved Sweden, Russia, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After the death of King John III Sobieski, Augustus II became king in 1697. However, Sweden supported Stanisław as an alternative candidate. In 1704, Swedish forces helped elect Stanisław to the throne. He was officially crowned on September 24, 1705, with a new crown and scepter. This was because the original royal regalia had been taken to Saxony by Augustus II.

Stanisław's first reign was unstable because he relied heavily on Swedish support. In 1709, the Swedish King Charles XII lost a major battle at Poltava. This defeat caused Stanisław's authority to vanish. He eventually abdicated the Polish crown. In exchange, he received the small state of Palatine Zweibrücken in the Holy Roman Empire. He lived in various places, including Wissembourg in Alsace. His family connections grew stronger when his daughter, Maria Leszczyńska, married King Louis XV of France in 1725.

France supported Stanisław, while Russia supported Frederick Augustus II of Saxony. Stanisław even traveled to Warsaw disguised as a coachman to reach the election. Despite his election, a Russian army of 20,000 men besieged him at Danzig in 1734. The siege lasted 135 days and caused many casualties.

The Peace of Vienna in 1738 finally recognized Augustus III as the King of Poland. To compensate Stanisław, he was granted the duchies of Bar and Lorraine.
