He mostly played the tenor saxophone. Many people called him "The Sound." This was because his music had a warm and smooth tone. He loved the mellow sound of his idol, Lester Young. Getz became very well known in the late 1940s. He played with Woody Herman's big band during that time. Critics say he was one of the greatest saxophone players ever. He played in many different styles, like bebop and cool jazz.

Getz worked very hard to master his instrument. He started playing the harmonica when he was twelve. His father bought him an alto saxophone for $35 when he was thirteen. He soon learned to play many types of saxophones and the clarinet. He eventually chose the tenor saxophone as his main instrument. To get better, he practiced for eight hours every single day. He studied with a teacher named Bill Shiner in the Bronx. Interestingly, Getz said he never actually studied music theory or harmony.

His family history began far away from the United States. His father, Al, was born in London in 1904. His grandparents came from Kyiv, Ukraine. They moved to London to escape something called anti-Jewish pogroms. In London, they owned a tailor shop for over 13 years. Eventually, the whole family moved to America in 1914. The family name changed from Gayetski to Getz when they arrived. They first lived in Philadelphia but later moved to New York City.

Getz helped bring bossa nova music to the United States. Bossa nova is a style of music from Brazil. He worked with musicians like João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim. In 1962, they recorded the album Jazz Samba. This album sold over one million copies and earned a gold record. He also recorded the famous song "The Girl from Ipanema" in 1964. This hit song helped him win a Grammy Award.

His work with the Gilbertos was very successful and famous.

Life was not always easy for the talented musician. Getz struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for many years. He faced hard times that led to arrests and legal trouble. He eventually began attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the 1980s. He also worked as a teacher at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. In 1986, he was put into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame. Even with his struggles, his musical legacy remains very strong today.
