One group was the Mississippian culture, which built many large earth mounds for homes and temples. Because of these mounds, the city earned the nickname "Mound City." Other tribes like the Osage and the Illiniwek also lived in this region. In 1673, French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette first traveled through this river valley. Later, French traders began to settle the area to start a business.

Three French fur traders founded the city on February 14, 1764. These men were Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Pierre Laclède, and Auguste Chouteau. They named the city after King Louis IX of France. Laclède chose this spot because it was high up and did not flood easily. He also liked that there were forests for wood and grass for farming. The city grew quickly as a center for the French fur trade. In 1804, the United States took control of the city through the Louisiana Purchase.

St. Louis became a very important port on the Mississippi River during the 1800s. It was even the fourth-largest city in the country for a time. Explorers like Lewis and Clark used the city as a starting point for their famous journey. In 1904, the city hosted a huge event called the World's Fair.

St. Louis is an independent city located on the eastern edge of Missouri in the United States. It sits near the confluence where the Mississippi and Missouri rivers meet. This location makes it a vital part of the regional geography. The city proper had a population of 301,578 in 2020. However, the larger metropolitan area includes parts of Illinois. This metropolitan region has over 2.8 million people. It is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri. It is also the second-largest in Illinois. The combined statistical area is the 20th-largest in the United States.

The land was home to Native American cultures for thousands of years. The Mississippian culture was a major group in this region. They built many large earthwork mounds for temples and homes. One major center was at Cahokia Mounds. These mounds were active from 900 to 1500. Because of these structures, the area was nicknamed "Mound City." Many mounds were later destroyed during city development. Other tribes like the Osage and the Illiniwek lived here too.

In 1673, French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette traveled through the valley. Later, La Salle claimed the region for France as part of La Louisiane.

French fur traders founded the city on February 14, 1764. The founders were Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Pierre Laclède, and Auguste Chouteau. They named the city after King Louis IX of France. Laclède wanted a location for a fur trading business. He searched for a site that would not flood easily. He found an elevated area near the river confluence. This spot had good natural drainage. It also had nearby forests for timber and grasslands for farming. Laclède even planned the city using a street layout from New Orleans.

The political control of St. Louis changed many times. After the Seven Years' War, France transferred its western territories to Spain. The city remained under Spanish control until 1803. Then, the land was transferred to the French First Republic. Finally, the United States acquired St. Louis through the Louisiana Purchase in 1804. This made the city a gateway to the new territory. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition departed from St. Louis. They explored the vast territory along the Missouri River. They returned to the city in September 1806. This era helped establish St. Louis as a major center for explorers and settlers.

During the 19th century, St. Louis grew into a massive port. Steamboats began arriving in 1817 to connect the city to New Orleans. The population grew very quickly during this time. In 1840, there were fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. By 1860, the population had risen to more than 160,000. From 1870 until the 1920 census, it was the fourth-largest city in the United States. The city also faced difficult times during the American Civil War. Economic activity was hurt by the Union blockade of the Mississippi River. However, the completion of the Eads Bridge in 1874 helped industrial development. This bridge connected the two banks of the river.

Today, St. Louis has a very diverse and strong economy. The GDP of Greater St. Louis was $226.6 billion in 2023. The economy relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and aviation. The area is home to sixteen Fortune 1000 companies. Six of these are also Fortune 500 companies. Many federal agencies have significant operations in the city. These include the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The city is also a major center for research and medicine. The Washington University Medical Center includes many pharmaceutical institutions.
