Genetic research has also revealed how different spoonbill species are related. A 2010 study looked at mitochondrial DNA to find these connections. The results showed that the roseate and yellow-billed spoonbills are each other's closest relatives. These two species descended from an early offshoot of the ancestors of the other four species. Some scientists argued these two should be in their own genera, named Platibis and Ajaja. However, because all six species look so similar morphologically, most keep them in the single genus Platalea.
