SpongeBob SquarePants is a highly successful American animated comedy series.
Created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg, it airs on Nickelodeon. The series follows the adventures of an optimistic sea sponge in Bikini Bottom. This underwater city is located in the Pacific Ocean. It sits beneath a coral reef known as Bikini Atoll. The show has become a major cultural touchstone for Millennials and Generation Z. It is also a massive part of internet culture through various online memes.
The series focuses on SpongeBob and his various aquatic friends. SpongeBob is an energetic sponge who lives in a submerged pineapple. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant. His best friend is Patrick Star, a friendly pink starfish living under a rock. Sandy Cheeks is a squirrel from Texas who wears a diving suit to breathe. Squidward Tentacles is a grumpy octopus who lives in an Easter Island moai.
Other characters include Mr. Krabs, a greedy red crab, and Plankton, a one-eyed copepod. Plankton runs the rival Chum Bucket restaurant and tries to steal secret recipes.
Bikini Bottom is a unique setting designed with a nautical theme. The production crew used objects like ropes, anchors, and ship wheels for locations. This ensured everything felt connected to the sea. Instead of clouds, the sky features "sky flowers." These are meant to look like the patterns on a Hawaiian shirt.
The city includes many specific locations like Jellyfish Fields and Goo Lagoon. Jellyfish Fields is a seagrass meadow used for "jellyfishing." Goo Lagoon is a subaqueous brine pool that serves as a beach. Transitions between scenes often use bubbles and the sound of rushing water.
Stephen Hillenburg developed the concept through his background in marine biology. He previously worked at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California. There, he created an educational comic called The Intertidal Zone. This unpublished book featured anthropomorphic lifeforms that later became show characters. Hillenburg also studied experimental animation at the California Institute of the Arts. He worked as a director on the series Rocko's Modern Life before creating his own show. He wanted a single main character rather than a buddy comedy. He chose a sea sponge because it was a "weird" creature.
Developing the character required specific creative decisions and compromises. Hillenburg originally wanted the character to be an adult. Nickelodeon executives wanted him to be a child in school. To resolve this, Hillenburg created a boating school for adults. This allowed SpongeBob to attend classes as an adult character. The name "SpongeBoy" was originally considered for the lead. However, a pencil company already used that name. The name "SquarePants" was added after voice actor Tom Kenny saw the character.
The show has achieved massive commercial and critical success. It has won six Annie Awards and four Emmy Awards. It also holds a record twenty-two Kids' Choice Awards. As of 2025, it is the longest-running American children's animated series. The franchise has generated over $16 billion in merchandising revenue by 2024.
This success has led to a large multimedia franchise. It includes four theatrical films and two streaming films. There is also a Broadway musical and various video games. Spin-off series include Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show.
SpongeBob's influence extends into many different parts of life. It is a massive part of the global economy through merchandise.
You can even see the characters at large public events. For example, SpongeBob appears at hot air balloon festivals.
The show also connects to real-world locations like Bikini Atoll. While some fans theorize the characters are mutants from nuclear testing, the show remains a beloved piece of animation history. It continues to grow, with a sixteenth season scheduled for 2025.
