A sphere is a round shape.

Sphere and Ball
Sphere and Ball

It is like a ball. Every point on its surface is the same distance from a center point. We call this distance the radius. If you draw a line from the center to the other side, you get the diameter. The diameter is twice as long as the radius.

Sphere halve
Sphere halve

A great circle is a circle that goes through the center. It cuts the sphere into two equal halves. These halves are called hemispheres.

We see spheres in many places. Soap bubbles take this shape. The Earth is also shaped like a sphere. In math, a sphere is just the outer surface. A ball is the solid part inside.

Sphere and circumscribed cylinder

A long time ago, a man named Archimedes studied them. He found how to measure their volume. Volume is the amount of space inside. He also found how to measure the surface area. The sphere is a very special shape. It holds the most volume for its surface area. This is why bubbles stay round.
