A spectrometer is a tool used to study things. It separates parts of a physical event to measure them.

One type is an optical spectrometer. It looks at light. It can split white light into many colors. We call this a spectrum.

It uses a prism or a grating to do this. A prism bends light. A grating uses diffraction, which is a way to spread light out. These tools show how much light is at each color. This helps scientists know what a star or planet is made of.

Other tools look at tiny bits like atoms. A mass spectrometer measures the mass of atoms in a gas. It looks at the mass and the charge of ions. An ion is a tiny bit with an electric charge.

Some tools use magnets. A magnetic spectrometer uses a magnetic field to move charged particles. The particles move in a circle.

By watching how they move, scientists can learn about their energy. This helps us study chemistry and physics. These tools help us learn how the universe works.
