It took place between the United States and Spain. This war changed how many countries worked together. It marked the end of Spain's long rule in many places. At the same time, the United States grew much stronger. The war helped the U.S. become a major world power. It also gave the U.S. control over several islands far away.

Many things led to the start of the fighting. In Cuba, people were revolting to gain independence from Spain.

Some Spanish leaders used very harsh methods to stop these rebels. This made many people in the United States feel angry. Newspaper owners like Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst printed big stories about it. This is often called "yellow journalism." These stories helped convince more Americans to support the Cuban rebels.

A single event pushed the two nations into war. In January 1898, the U.S. sent a ship called the USS Maine to Cuba.

The ship was there to protect American citizens in Havana. On February 15, a mysterious explosion caused the ship to sink. This event made President William McKinley face huge pressure to act. On April 21, the U.S. began a blockade of Cuba. Soon after, the two countries officially declared war.

U.S. troops also landed in Puerto Rico and Guam. The war moved quickly across these many different islands. Most of the battles were won by the U.S. navy.

This treaty gave the United States ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The U.S. even paid $20 million to Spain for some parts of the Philippines. Cuba was set to become independent in 1902. However, it became a protectorate, which means the U.S. still had a lot of influence. This war was a huge turning point for both nations.
