Space tourism began in April 2001. An American businessman named Dennis Tito was the first space tourist. He traveled in a Soyuz-TM32 spacecraft. Between 2001 and 2009, seven tourists made eight flights to the International Space Station. These trips were helped by a company called Space Adventures. In September 2006, Anousheh Ansari became the first female space tourist. These early trips often cost between 20 and 25 million US dollars.

Preparing for spaceflight requires intense physical and technical training. Tourists must be in excellent physical condition to handle the rigors of launch and reentry. One common training method involves using a centrifuge to prepare for high g-forces. G-forces are the intense feelings of acceleration that push against the body during flight. To prepare for weightlessness, participants often fly in high-altitude jet planes. These planes perform parabolic arcs, which create brief periods of zero gravity. Additionally, travelers may use simulators to learn how to operate or repair spacecraft systems.

Before the modern era, several programs paved the way for non-professional travelers. The Soviet Intercosmos program allowed cosmonauts from various countries, such as Poland and Vietnam, to fly. In the United States, the Space Shuttle program included payload specialist positions. These roles were often filled by representatives from companies managing specific equipment. In 1983, Ulf Merbold and Byron Lichtenberg became the first payload specialists on mission STS-9. By 1984, Charles D. Walker became the first non-government astronaut, with his employer paying US$40,000 for the flight. NASA also attempted a Space Flight Participant program, which selected teacher Christa McAuliffe in 1985, but the program was cancelled following the Challenger disaster.

Suborbital space tourism is a growing sector driven by private aerospace companies. Scaled Composites won the $10 million X Prize in 2004 with SpaceShipOne. This vehicle was the first private craft to reach an altitude of twice the Kármán Line, which is the boundary of space. Virgin Galactic, a joint venture involving Richard Branson, later developed the SpaceShipTwo class of spaceplanes. Their vehicle, VSS Unity, successfully flew four passengers to an altitude of nearly 90 km in July 2021. Another major player is Blue Origin, which developed the New Shepard system.
