Space Battleship Yamato is a very famous Japanese anime series.

It tells a grand story about hope and survival. The show first aired on Yomiuri TV from October 1974 to March 1975. It follows an international crew from Earth on a mission through space. They travel on a massive warship named Yamato. This ship is based on a real battleship from World War II. The series is known for its serious themes and deep stories.

Many later shows like Gundam and Macross were influenced by it. Even the video game Space Invaders was inspired by this work.

The story begins in the year 2199. An alien empire called the Gamilas has been bombing Earth for five years. This war has left the planet covered in dangerous radiation. Because of this, humans must live in cities deep underground. A message arrives from a distant planet named Iscandar. Queen Starsha says she can help Earth with something called Cosmo DNA. To get it, the crew must travel far into space.

They use a special Wave Motion Engine to travel faster than light. The ship also has a powerful Wave Motion Gun to protect them.

Making the show was a long and changing process. Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki began working on the idea in 1973. At first, the project had a very different name. It was called "Asteroid Ship Icarus." The original idea was about a crew inside a hollowed-out asteroid. The story was also much darker than the version we know.

The characters were originally much less kind to one another. Only one person was meant to survive the whole journey. Eventually, the creators decided to make it a story about humanity and love.

Many people helped bring Yamato to life. Leiji Matsumoto became a key person for the project. He redesigned the ship and the crew members. He also created the Wave Motion Gun for the story. The production team also included Keisuke Fujikawa and Eiichi Yamamoto.

The team originally planned to make 52 episodes. They later changed that number to 39 episodes. Finally, the show aired with exactly 26 episodes. This change happened because of high costs and low ratings. Some characters, like Captain Harlock, were cut from the final version.

Watching Yamato feels like going on a giant journey. The crew must race against a ticking clock. They have only 364 days to reach Iscandar and return. If they fail, the radiation will harm everyone on Earth. The crew travels past the Moon and even near Jupiter.

On Jupiter, the ship even falls into a sea of methane gas. The crew must use their skills to survive these hard jobs. It is a story about how people can work together to save their home.
