This region has a very long and interesting history. Some of the earliest modern humans lived in this part of Africa.

Long ago, the Kingdom of Mapungubwe was one of the first organized states here. It sat between the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers. Later, the Kingdom of Zimbabwe became very powerful. They built Great Zimbabwe, which is the largest stone structure in the area. Other strong groups like the Zulu Kingdom also rose to power in the 19th century. These kingdoms used farming, cattle, and gold to grow.

The ground in Southern Africa is filled with amazing treasures. It has the largest amount of platinum in the whole world.

Miners also look for gold, diamonds, copper, and silver. These minerals make the region one of the wealthiest parts of Africa. Many large countries like Angola and Zambia have huge amounts of these resources. Mining helps the economy grow, but the region still faces hard jobs. Many people struggle with poverty, crime, and sickness like HIV/AIDS.

Because different organizations use different rules, there is no single agreed definition of the area. Some groups use a very strict definition. This includes only Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa. Other groups, like the United Nations, use a different scheme. The UN definition includes countries like Madagascar and Comoros. It also places Angola in Middle Africa and Zambia in Eastern Africa.

The Southern African Development Community, or SADC, is another group that helps countries work together. It was established in 1980 to promote cooperation across the region.

The physical landscape of Southern Africa is incredibly varied. It features everything from dense forests to wide grasslands. These grasslands are often called the veldt. You can also find high mountains and vast deserts.

Water systems play a vital role in the geography of the region. The Zambezi River is the most prominent river system. It flows from the northwest corner of Zambia and western Angola. Eventually, it reaches the Indian Ocean on the Mozambique coast. Along this journey, the river creates Victoria Falls.

This waterfall sits on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is one of the largest waterfalls in the world. Other important river systems include the Limpopo basin. These rivers often act as natural barriers or sea lanes between countries.

The region is also famous for its massive mineral wealth. Southern Africa contains the world's largest resources of platinum and platinum group elements. It also holds large amounts of chromium, vanadium, and cobalt. Other valuable minerals include gold, diamonds, copper, and uranium.

A long chain of these resources stretches across the land. It starts with oil fields in northwest Angola. It moves through the diamond regions of Huambo Province. Then it reaches the Copper Belt in Zambia and Congo. In the south, the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe connects to the Bushveld basin in South Africa.

Human history in this region goes back hundreds of thousands of years. Scientists believe modern humans emerged in Africa between 350,000 and 260,000 years ago. The San people are among the oldest inhabitants of the area.

Later, organized states began to form. The Kingdom of Mapungubwe existed between the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers around 1075. It is thought to be the first class-based social system in the region. After Mapungubwe declined, the Kingdom of Zimbabwe rose to power. They built Great Zimbabwe, which is the largest stone structure in precolonial Southern Africa.

Other powerful kingdoms also shaped the history of the land. The Kingdom of Mutapa and the Kingdom of Butua emerged during the decline of Great Zimbabwe. Later, the Rozwi Empire became a powerful Shona state. In the 19th century, the Zulu Kingdom rose under the leader Shaka. This kingdom covered much of present-day KwaZulu-Natal. During this time, Boer settlers also arrived in the region. This led to conflicts, such as the Battle of Blood River in 1838.

Today, Southern Africa has a more developed economy and infrastructure than other African regions. It has strong manufacturing and mining sectors. However, the region still faces many serious challenges. Many areas struggle with poverty, crime, and inequality. The region also deals with the epidemic of HIV/AIDS. In fact, Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia have the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world.

Scientists also watch the climate closely. Future projections suggest the region may become hotter and drier due to global climate change.
