Sometimes, this beautiful place has faced hard times. There have been several terrorist attacks in the region. In 1985, eight people died at the Ras Burqa resort. In 2004, bombings in Nuweiba killed 34 people. A very large attack hit Sharm El Sheikh in 2005. That event killed 88 people and was very sad. In 2006, more bombings happened in Dahab. In 2014, a bus was attacked in Taba. The Egyptian army has worked hard to make the cities safe again.
The South Sinai Governorate is a unique administrative region in Egypt. 

The governorate is divided into several municipal divisions for administration. These divisions include Abu Redis, which also includes Abu Zenima. Other areas are Dahab, El Tor, and Nuweiba. There are also the divisions of Ras Sedr and Saint Catherine. Sharm El Sheikh is split into two separate administrative parts. Finally, there is the rural division of Taba. The total land area of the governorate is 31,272 square kilometers. 
Demographics show a mix of urban and rural living. In 2024, the urbanization rate was 51.1 percent. This means slightly more people live in towns than in the countryside. Specifically, 59,845 people lived in urban areas. Meanwhile, 57,268 people lived in rural areas. The Bedouin people inhabit the Mount Sinai area. Because the mountains are hard to reach, some orchards have been used by narcotics smugglers. 
One of the most significant landmarks is Saint Catherine's Monastery. It is an Eastern Orthodox monastery located in the central part of the governorate. It sits at the mouth of a gorge at the foot of Mount Sinai. This site is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction took place between the years 548 and 565. It is recognized as one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world. 
The monastery is famous for its incredible collection of books. It houses the world's oldest continually operating library. This library contains many unique manuscripts. One example is the Syriac Sinaiticus. Another famous book was the Codex Sinaiticus, which was kept there until 1859. Another religious site is the Raithu Monastery in El Tor. It was built on a site where 40 monks were massacred during the 4th or 5th century.
Tourism is a major part of the region because of its beauty. However, the area has also faced periods of violence. In 1985, eight people were killed at the Ras Burqa resort. In 2004, bombings in Nuweiba killed 34 people and wounded over 170. In 2005, a terrorist attack in Sharm El Sheikh killed 88 people. This was the deadliest terrorist action in Egypt's history. It exceeded the 1997 Luxor massacre, which killed 62 people. In 2006, the Dahab bombings killed 23 people. In 2014, a bus attack in Taba killed one driver and three South Korean tourists. 
Despite these past events, the region is now considered safe. The Egyptian government and the Egyptian army took firm actions. They worked to eliminate terrorism throughout the area. Today, the governorate remains an attractive destination for travelers. People visit to see sites like Wadi Mukattab and Wadi Feiran. The combination of ancient history and natural wonder continues to define South Sinai.
