They are a long chain of islands. There are 11 main islands in the group. They sit in the South Atlantic Ocean.

These islands are volcanoes. Some are very tall. One island has a lake of hot lava. This is very rare in the world.

No people live on the islands. The ground can shake from big earthquakes. These shakes happen often because of the volcanoes.

They sit in the South Atlantic Ocean. This chain is in the sub-Antarctic region. It is southeast of South Georgia. It is also northeast from the Antarctic Peninsula. The group has 11 main islands. These islands form a long arc from north to south.

The islands are divided into four groups. The north has the Traversay and Candlemas Islands. The middle has the Central Islands. The south has Southern Thule. Montagu is the largest island. Mount Belinda on Montagu is the highest point. Mount Michael on Saunders Island is also very special. It has a lava lake. A lava lake is a pool of hot, liquid rock. Only eight volcanoes in the world have one.

No people live on these islands. They are very remote. The islands can have violent earthquakes. Nine large earthquakes happened there in the last century. One big quake happened in August 2021. No one died from these shakes because no one lives there.

These islands are split into four different groups. The north has the Traversay and Candlemas Islands. The middle part is called the Central Islands. The southernmost group is known as Southern Thule. Montagu is the largest island in the whole chain. Mount Belinda on Montagu Island is the highest point. Mount Michael on Saunders Island is also very special. It has a persistent lava lake. This is a pool of hot, liquid rock. Only eight volcanoes in the world have one like this.

History tells us how these islands were found. Captain James Cook found the southern eight islands in 1775. He was on his second voyage on the HMS Resolution. He saw three rocky islands that were very high. He named the area Sandwich Land for John Montagu. Later, people added "South" to the name. This helped tell them apart from the islands now called Hawaii. A Russian group found the northern islands in 1819. They were led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen on the ship Vostok.

Many things happen in this remote part of the world. The islands are prone to violent earthquakes. Nine large earthquakes have happened there in the last century. The most recent one was in August 2021. It had a magnitude of 8.1. No one has died from these shakes. This is because the islands are uninhabited. There are no people living there. However, there are automatic weather stations on Thule Island and Zavodovski.

Different countries have had interests in these islands. The United Kingdom formally took control in 1908. Argentina claimed the islands in 1938. Argentina kept a naval base on Thule Island for many years. They were there from 1976 until 1982. The base was finally removed in June 1982. The buildings were then taken down in December. In 1985, the territory was renamed. It is now called South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. This name links the two groups together.

They are located in the sub-Antarctic region of the South Atlantic Ocean. This archipelago sits southeast of South Georgia. It is also northeast of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The islands form a volcanic arc. This is a curved chain of islands created by volcanic activity. The chain consists of 11 main islands. These islands stretch in a line from north to south.

The archipelago is organized into four distinct island groups. The northernmost group is the Traversay Islands. This group includes Zavodovski, Leskov, and Visokoi islands. To the south of these lie the Candlemas Islands. The middle section of the chain contains the Central Islands. These include Saunders, Montagu, and Bristol islands. The southernmost group is known as Southern Thule. Montagu is the largest island in the entire chain. Mount Belinda, located on Montagu Island, is the highest peak in the archipelago.

Volcanic activity defines much of the landscape and geology here. Some islands possess very rare features. Mount Michael on Saunders Island is the fourth highest peak. It contains a persistent lava lake. This is a pool of molten rock that stays active. Only eight volcanoes in the entire world have such a feature. Near Zavodovski Island, a submarine volcano exists. It is called the Protector Shoal. The islands are separated by various straits and channels. Forsters Passage separates Bristol Island from Southern Thule. Nelson Channel sits between Candlemas and Vindication Island. Douglas Strait divides Thule Island and Cook Island.

History records the discovery of these remote islands by different explorers. Captain James Cook discovered the southern eight islands in 1775. He was on his second voyage aboard the HMS Resolution. On 31 January, he saw three very high, rocky islands. He named the area "Sandwich Land." He did this to honor John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The word "South" was added later. This distinguished them from the Sandwich Islands in Hawaii. In 1819, a Russian expedition discovered the northern Traversay Islands. This mission was led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. He sailed aboard the sloop Vostok. Mikhail Lazarev commanded the Mirny during this expedition. They named the group after the Marquis de Traversay.

The political history of the islands involves several different nations. The United Kingdom formally annexed the islands in 1908. They were originally part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. Argentina claimed the islands in 1938. This led to challenges regarding British sovereignty. Argentina maintained a station called Teniente Esquivel from 1955 to 1956. Later, they held a naval base named Corbeta Uruguay on Thule Island. This base existed from 1976 until 1982. The British protested this presence through diplomacy. The base was finally removed on 20 June 1982. The installations were demolished in December of that year. In 1985, the territory was reorganized. It became the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Geological instability is a constant factor in this region. The archipelago is prone to violent earthquakes. Over the last century, nine earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher have occurred. The most recent major event happened in August 2021. It reached a magnitude of 8.1. Another significant quake occurred on 10 February 2008. It had a magnitude of 6.5. On 30 June 2008, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the area. The epicenter was 45 km away from Bristol Island. These quakes happen at a depth of 10 km. Because the islands are uninhabited, these events have not caused fatalities.

Life on the islands is very limited due to the environment. The South Sandwich Islands are uninhabited by humans. There are no permanent residents or towns. However, technology helps scientists study the area. Automatic weather stations are located on Thule Island and Zavodovski. These stations collect data without needing people present. The islands remain a remote and rugged part of the world. They serve as a significant example of a volcanic island arc in the sub-Antarctic zone.
