The history of this place goes back a long time. People believe the Ossetians come from a group called the Alans.

The Alans were a group of people who moved often. Long ago, they lived in a kingdom called Alania.

Today, people have different ideas about South Ossetia. Five members of the United Nations say it is its own state. These places are Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria. However, Georgia and most other nations say it is part of Georgia. This has caused many arguments and wars over the years. Since 2008, South Ossetia has relied on help from Russia. Some leaders there want to join the Russian Federation. This would change their status as an independent place.
