However, the House of Hanover stepped in instead. In 1658, Sophia married her third cousin, Ernest Augustus. This marriage helped the House of Hanover rise to great importance. In 1692, Ernest Augustus became the first Elector of Hanover.

Sophia was an intellectual leader and a lover of culture. She maintained a long friendship with the philosopher Gottfried Leibniz. They exchanged many letters that showed her deep curiosity about the world. She was well-read in the works of thinkers like René Descartes and Baruch Spinoza. Sophia also used writing as a way to process grief. At age fifty, she began writing her memoirs after several family members died. She was a respected chronicler of the royal courts in Europe.

As the Electress of Hanover, Sophia helped shape the physical world around her. She and her husband worked to improve the Herrenhausen Palace. She was the guiding spirit behind the creation of the beautiful Herrenhausen Gardens. These gardens and the palace remain important historical sites. Sophia also had a large family, bearing ten children. Seven of these children survived to adulthood. Her children held many important roles, such as the Queen in Prussia.

The Act of Settlement 1701 was the most significant event for her political future.
