She is a major star from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. Her career has lasted for over 70 years. This makes her one of the last surviving stars from that time. People all over the world know her for her many films. She has worked in both Italy and the United States. Her life story is a journey from a small town to global fame.

Loren's path to stardom began with beauty pageants.

At age 15, she entered "The Queen of the Sea" contest in Naples. She wore a dress made by her grandmother from taffeta curtains. She won a prize and a train ticket to Rome. This ticket helped her and her mother look for film work. Later, she won the title of Miss Elegance in the Miss Italia 1950 pageant. These early wins helped her start her acting career.

Her acting career grew through many different steps.

She first took small, uncredited roles in films like "Hearts at Sea." Her mother helped pay for acting lessons in a Neapolitan school. A man named Carlo Ponti later changed her name to Sophia Loren. This helped her appeal to more people around the world. In 1958, she signed a five-picture contract with Paramount Pictures. This contract launched her international career with films like "Houseboat."

Loren achieved great success with her role in the film "Two Women."

This film was directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1960. Her performance as a mother named Cesira was very powerful. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for this role. She was the first person to win an Oscar for a non-English-language performance. She also won many other prizes, like the Volpi Cup and a BAFTA Award. She has won seven David di Donatello awards for acting in Italy.

Today, Loren is remembered as one of the greatest film stars.

In 1999, the American Film Institute named her a great star of American film history. She is the last living person on that specific list. She has received many honors, including a special Academy Honorary Award. She was also named a Knight of the Legion of Honour in France. Even as she makes fewer movies, her impact on cinema remains huge. Her work connects the history of Italian film to the world of Hollywood.
