In antiquity, the region was a vital commercial hub. Some historians suggest the area was the location of the ancient Land of Punt. 

During the Middle Ages, several powerful Somali empires dominated regional trade. These included the Ajuran Sultanate, the Adal Sultanate, and the Sultanate of the Geledi. 
The modern era has been marked by significant political instability. In 1969, Siad Barre seized power and established the Somali Democratic Republic. 

Today, Somalia is working through a period of reconstruction and reform. In August 2012, a new provisional constitution was passed. This reform changed the nation into a federation.
