Somali plate

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Earth has many big pieces. One piece is the Somali plate. It sits on the middle line of the Earth. This plate covers half of Africa's east coast. It also includes the island of Madagascar.

The Somali plate is moving. It is pulling away from the African plate. This move makes the East African Rift. This rift is a large crack in the land. The plate is also moving toward India.

Many ocean ridges touch this plate. A ridge is a place where plates pull apart. The Carlsberg Ridge is one such place. It sits between the Somali and Indian plates. The Central Indian Ridge is another. It sits between the Somali and Australian plates. The Southwest Indian Ridge is the last one. It sits between the Somali and Antarctic plates.

Long ago, a super-continent called Gondwana formed. This happened between 1000 and 600 million years ago. Later, the land began to break apart. This rifting happened from 190 to 47 million years ago. It moved Madagascar away from Africa.
