During these forty years, the kingdom reached a time of great splendor. He worked closely with King Hiram I of Tyre to build many things. Solomon is credited with building the First Temple in Jerusalem. He also spent thirteen years building a large royal palace on a hill called Ophel. This palace had many halls, including the Hall of the Throne. Some stories say his throne even had moving parts like an early machine.

Wealth was a huge part of Solomon's rule. He grew rich through trade with many different lands. He sent ships to places like Tarshish and Ophir. They brought back gold, silver, pearls, and ivory. In just one year, he reportedly collected 666 talents of gold. However, the Bible also says his many foreign wives brought new gods into the land. This led to divine punishment and caused trouble later on. After he died, the kingdom eventually split into two parts.

Today, people look at Solomon in many different ways.

He was the son of King David and Bathsheba. The Hebrew Bible describes him as the penultimate ruler of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. His name, Solomon, is often linked to the concept of peace. Some scholars suggest his name might also mean "compensation" or "a substitute." Another theory connects it to the deified evening star, Shalim. He was also known by the name Jedidiah, meaning "friend of God."

According to biblical accounts, Solomon's rise to power involved complex court politics. As King David grew old and weak, different factions fought for the throne. Adonijah, a son of David, attempted to declare himself king. However, Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan worked to secure the succession for Solomon. David then proclaimed Solomon as the next ruler. Solomon ascended to the throne when he was approximately fifteen years old. Upon his accession, he conducted an extensive purge of his father's officials. He also consolidated power by appointing loyal friends to military and religious posts.

Solomon is most famous for the immense wisdom attributed to him by religious tradition. The Bible records that God appeared to him in a dream. When offered any gift, Solomon requested wisdom to guide his people. Because he did not ask for personal riches or long life, God granted him both. One famous example of his intellect is the Judgment of Solomon.

In this story, two women claimed the same child. Solomon proposed cutting the baby in half to reveal the true mother. The woman who showed compassion by offering to give up the child was identified as the real mother.

His reign is estimated to have lasted from approximately 970 to 931 BCE.

This forty-year period was a time of great commercial prosperity. Solomon expanded the military strength of his kingdom, specifically the cavalry and chariot arms. He also established numerous colonies that served as trading posts and military outposts. He maintained a very profitable relationship with King Hiram I of Tyre. Together, they sent expeditions to lands like Tarshish and Ophir. These journeys brought luxury goods such as gold, silver, sandalwood, pearls, ivory, apes, and peacocks back to Israel.

Solomon's administration focused heavily on massive construction projects. He is credited with building the First Temple in Jerusalem to house the Ark of the Covenant. He also spent thirteen years constructing a royal palace complex on Ophel. This complex included the Hall of the Throne, which may have featured early mechanical parts. Reports suggest he collected 666 talents of gold in tribute in a single year. This amount equals approximately 18,125 kilograms of gold. He also worked on water works and city defenses like the Millo.

Despite this reported splendor, the historical reality of Solomon's reign is a subject of intense debate. Many modern scholars view the biblical descriptions of his empire as anachronistic exaggerations. They suggest the stories may function more like royal legends or folktales. While archaeologists have found remains of gates at Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer, they do not agree these date to Solomon's time. Notably, no physical remains of the Temple or the palace have ever been found in Jerusalem. The level of opulence described in the texts remains difficult to verify through archaeology.

Solomon's legacy extends far beyond the borders of ancient Israel. He is revered in Christianity, where he is seen as a teacher of wisdom. In Islam, he is honored as a major prophet. He is also traditionally linked to the authorship of several biblical books. These include Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs. In some historical circles, he was even viewed as a magician or an exorcist. Ultimately, his reign ended in a division of the kingdom. After his death, his son Rehoboam's policies caused the northern tribes to split away, creating the separate kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
