Soda Stereo was a legendary Argentine rock band that redefined the musical landscape of Latin America.

Formed in Buenos Aires in 1982, the group consisted of singer-guitarist Gustavo Cerati, bassist Zeta Bosio, and drummer Charly Alberti. They became the best-selling Argentine band in history, selling seven million records by 2007. The band is celebrated for its constant musical evolution and its ability to connect with youth during a period of social change. Their influence helped revitalize the Latin rock scene across many different nations.

The band's formation began with a musical bond between Cerati and Bosio. They met in the summer of 1981 in Punta del Este, Uruguay, while they were both students. Before Soda Stereo, Cerati participated in groups called Sauvage and Stress. Bosio played with a group called The Morgan. Cerati eventually joined Bosio's band before they decided to create a new project together. They recruited Charly Alberti to play the drums after Cerati heard his talent. The trio even experimented with the name Los Estereotipos before choosing Soda Stereo.

Soda Stereo's sound underwent several distinct stages of development. Their 1984 self-titled debut album featured a sound influenced by new wave and ska. This was followed by a move into post-punk styles on albums like Nada personal (1985) and Signos (1986). In 1990, the band released Canción Animal, which featured the alternative rock anthem "De Música Ligera." Their final studio albums, Dynamo (1992) and Sueño Stereo (1995), incorporated more complex genres like shoegaze and art rock. This constant experimentation allowed them to remain relevant to changing musical tastes.

The band's rise to stardom was closely tied to the return of democracy in Argentina in 1983. Zeta Bosio noted that the new democratic era provided an "adrenaline of something new" for young musicians. This social shift allowed for more creative freedom and a desire to challenge old norms. After a small debut at a fashion show in 1983, the band gained traction in the underground rock scene. They eventually signed with CBS Records after being discovered by producer Horacio Martínez. This professional step allowed them to record their first studio album in late 1984.

The scale of their success is reflected in their massive audience numbers and record sales. After releasing Nada personal in 1985, the band played four shows at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias. These concerts drew a total of 20,000 spectators and led to double platinum certification. Their popularity soon crossed borders, reaching hundreds of thousands of fans in Chile, Peru, and Ecuador. By the time of their 2007 reunion tour, they were performing in massive venues like the Estadio Nacional in Santiago.

Soda Stereo's impact on Latin American culture was particularly strong in the late 1980s. In 1986, they began touring countries like Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru, which revolutionized the local markets. Their performance at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Chile in 1987 helped cement their status as idols for Chilean youth. They often used visual elements to enhance their music, such as the music video for "Cuando pase el temblor," which was filmed at the pre-Incan ruins of Pucará de Tilcara. They also used innovative stage effects, like using out-of-sync television sets during their debut album presentation.

The band's history includes both massive reunions and periods of profound loss. After disbanding in 1997, the members pursued solo careers, with Cerati finding great success. They reunited for the Me Verás Volver tour in 2007, but the group faced tragedy when Cerati suffered a stroke in 2010. He fell into a coma for four years before passing away in 2014. Despite this, the band's legacy continues through the Gracias Totales tour in 2020, which featured guest singers like Chris Martin. Looking toward the future, the band announced the Ecos tour for 2026, which will feature a digital version of Cerati performing on stage.
