Soccsksargen is an administrative region located in the south-central part of Mindanao in the Philippines. It is officially designated as Region XII. The name itself is a combination of the names of its key areas. The region consists of four provinces: Cotabato, Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat. It also includes one highly urbanized city known as General Santos.
The geography of the region is diverse and complex. It is bounded by Bukidnon to the north and the Davao Region to the east. To the northwest and west lies the Bangsamoro region. The southwest is bordered by the Celebes Sea. This maritime border also connects the region to the Indonesian provinces of Gorontalo and North Sulawesi. The landscape features extensive coastlines, valleys, and various mountain ranges.
A major feature is the Cotabato Basin. This is a large depression surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides. The region acts as a drainage basin for Mindanao. The Rio Grande de Mindanao flows through this basin. It is the longest river in Mindanao and the second longest in the Philippines. This river eventually empties into Illana Bay within the Moro Gulf. To the south, the Tiruray Highlands form a mountain range that blocks the basin from the southern coast.
The history of the area reaches back to very ancient times. The oldest known civilization in the region was located in Maitum, Sarangani. Archaeologists discovered Maitum Anthropomorphic Pottery there. These unique jars are designated as National Cultural Treasures. From the 14th century until the early 20th century, the Maguindanao and Buayan sultanates dominated much of the region. These Muslim sultanates influenced local datus and controlled General Santos City as a vital port.
Administrative changes have shaped the region over many years. It was formerly known as Central Mindanao. Several provinces were removed from this area to form the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). For example, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao were part of the original group. In September 2001, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Executive Order No. 36. This order transferred South Cotabato, Sarangani, and General Santos to Region XII. The region was then renamed Soccsksargen.
In 2004, Koronadal was named the regional political and socio-economic center. This changed the way government offices functioned in the area. Previously, the regional center was Cotabato City. However, a 2019 plecite changed things for that city. Cotabato City and 63 barangays from Cotabato province opted to join the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. This means they are no longer part of the Soccsksargen region.
Soccsksargen is a cultural melting pot with many different people. The first inhabitants were indigenous groups like the B'laans, T'bolis, Manobos, and Tedurays. Muslim groups such as the Iranuns, Maguindanaons, and Sangil also lived there. Later, Christian migrants arrived from Luzon and the Visayas. Many came from Ilocandia, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor to work in agriculture. Today, many different ethnolinguistic groups live together, and intermarriage is common.
The economy of the region is quite strong. It contributes 2.6% to the national GDP and 18.3% of the Mindanao Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). The region is also becoming a famous producer of high-quality coffee. In the 2024 Philippine Coffee Quality Competition, the region showed its skill in coffee farming.
