A sniper is a person who aims from far away.
They hide well so others cannot see them. They often use special tools to help them see. This helps them do their job.
Many snipers work in teams. One person is the shooter. Another person is a helper. The helper looks for targets. They also check the wind. This helps the shooter aim better.
Some snipers work for the police. They help keep people safe. They often work in big towns. They might watch from a high building. This helps them watch over an area.
Snipers must learn many skills. They learn how to move quietly. They also learn how to hide. They must stay very still. This helps them stay hidden.
It is a very hard job. They must be very careful.
They work hard to be good at it.
A sniper is a trained marksman. They aim at targets from far away. Most snipers stay hidden so others cannot find them.
They use special tools like telescopic sights. These sights help them see clearly at long distances.
Many snipers work in small teams. One person is the shooter. Another person is the spotter. The spotter helps by looking for targets. They also check the wind and the distance. This helps the shooter hit the target.
Some snipers work for the police. They often work in cities. They might watch from a high building to keep people safe.
Police snipers use their skills to help in emergencies.
Learning to be a sniper takes much work. They must learn to move quietly. They also learn how to hide in nature. They must control their bodies and stay very still.
This helps them do their job well.

Snipers use special tools to do their jobs. They use high-precision rifles for accuracy. They also use telescopic sights to see clearly. These sights provide high magnification for long distances. This helps them find targets very far away.\n\nBeing a sniper requires many special skills. They must learn how to move without being seen. This is called stalking. They also learn camouflage to blend into nature.
Snipers must also be great observers. They act as scouts to find information. They feed this data back to their leaders. This information helps guide other parts of the military. They must also learn to estimate target ranges. They use charts to make quick math calculations in the field.\n\nThe word sniper has a very interesting history. It comes from the verb \"to snipe.\" This word started in the 1770s in British India. It referred to hunters shooting a bird called a snipe. The snipe is a very alert bird. It has colors that help it hide. It also flies in a very tricky way.
Because of this, hunters had to be very stealthy. The term \"sniper\" became common during the First World War. Long before that, people used the term \"sharpshooter.\" In 1801, British newspapers used that name for skilled shooters.\n\n
A sniper is a specialized military or paramilitary marksman. They engage targets from positions of concealment. These positions allow them to operate at distances exceeding a target's detection capabilities.
Beyond long-range marksmanship, snipers often serve as scouts or observers. They feed vital tactical information back to command headquarters. This role makes them essential for intelligence gathering and reconnaissance.
Effective sniping requires extreme control over the body and the senses. Snipers must master a wide variety of special operation techniques. These include stalking, tracking, and infiltration. They also study bushcraft and field craft to survive in various environments.
To hit targets at extreme distances, they must use complex data. They use scopes and monitors to adjust their aim. During training, they use charts to perform last-minute mathematical calculations in the field.
The word "sniper" has a unique etymological history. It comes from the verb "to snipe," which originated in the 1770s. British soldiers in India used this term to describe shooting snipes. The snipe is a wader bird known for its alertness and erratic flight.
Because the bird is so difficult to hit, hunters had to be stealthy. The term "sniper" became common during the First World War. An older term, "sharpshooter," was used by British newspapers as early as 1801. This term relates to shooting competitions held in Munich during the 15th century.
Modern military doctrine varies between different countries. A primary function for a sniper is to remain concealed at all times. They reduce an enemy's combat ability by targeting high-value personnel, such as officers. This can cause disruption and demoralize opposing forces. Some snipers use anti-materiel rifles for destroying military equipment.
These larger caliber rifles include the Barrett M82 and the McMillan Tac-50. They often use the .50 BMG cartridge for these heavy tasks.
In many Western militaries, snipers operate in two-man teams. This unit consists of a shooter and a spotter.
The shooter focuses primarily on firing the shot. The spotter assists with target observation and security. They also account for atmospheric conditions like wind speed. The spotter might use an anemometer to measure wind or observe ground heat mirage. They may also use a rangefinder to predict external ballistics. This helps the team calculate the shooting angle and required lead for moving targets.
Some teams include an additional member called a flanker. The flanker acts as a sentry to observe areas not visible to the others. This provides rear security and perimeter defense.
The flanker is usually armed with a faster-firing weapon, such as an assault rifle. This helps the team defend themselves during close-quarters combat. In dense urban environments, like Fallujah, Iraq, two teams might be deployed together. This increases their overall security and effectiveness.
Law enforcement snipers, or police sharpshooters, operate differently than military snipers. Their missions are usually shorter and occur in civilian settings. They are often deployed during hostage scenarios or to provide security at large events.
Police snipers typically operate at much shorter ranges, often under 100 meters. They are trained to use their skills only as a last resort. They follow the rule of being prepared to take a life to save a life.
History shows the importance of specialized training for these roles. In 1972, the Munich massacre highlighted a need for police counter-terrorism units. At that time, German law prohibited using the military for domestic matters. This led to the founding of the specialized GSG 9 unit.
Extreme distances have also been recorded in combat. In November 2023, a member of the Security Service of Ukraine hit a target at an undisclosed distance. This followed a 2017 record by a Canadian JTF2 member at 2,430 meters.
These feats require incredible precision and mathematical calculation.
