There were two parts to the city. Old Smyrna sat on a small peninsula. New Smyrna grew on the slopes of Pagos Hill.

Many leaders ruled the city. Alexander the Great inspired a new city there. Later, Rome took control. Smyrna became a major part of the Roman Empire. It was a leading city in the province of Asia. A large earthquake hit in 178 AD. People rebuilt the city after that. Today, the city is called İzmir. You can still visit the old Agora. This was a large open market area.
