Most of them live in Southeast Asia. They like places with plenty of fresh water. This includes rivers, lakes, and even rice paddies.

These otters have short, sleek fur. Their backs are dark brown or reddish-brown. Their undersides are a lighter gray-brown. They have a round head and a flat tail.

Their strong legs have webbed feet. They also have sharp claws to catch slippery fish.

Smooth-coated otters live in groups of up to 11. They eat mostly fish. Sometimes they hunt rats in rice fields. They also eat snakes and insects. When they hunt fish, they may swim in a V-shape. This makes the fish jump out of the water. Then the otters catch them with their snouts.

In Singapore, these otters live in cities. They can use gaps under buildings for homes.

Sadly, they are a vulnerable species. This means they are at risk. They face threats from pollution and losing their homes. People also hunt them illegally.
