He was born on July 30, 1881, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. His father, Thomas Butler, was a lawyer and a judge. He even served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 31 years. Smedley grew up in a family with deep roots in America. He attended the Haverford School, where he played baseball and football. Even though his father wanted him to stay in school, Smedley joined the military very young.

Butler had a very long and busy military career. He joined the Marines during the Spanish-American War in 1898. To join, he had to lie about his age to become a second lieutenant. He fought in the Philippine-American War and the Boxer Rebellion in China. During a battle in China, he risked his life to save a wounded officer. For his bravery, he received a promotion to captain.

Many of Butler's missions were part of the Banana Wars. These were actions in Central America and the Caribbean. The United States sent troops to protect American business interests there. One big company involved was the United Fruit Company. They grew things like bananas, tobacco, and sugar cane. Butler served in places like Honduras and Nicaragua. In Honduras, he earned the nickname "Old Gimlet Eye" because of his intense stare.

He also served in Panama and near Veracruz, Mexico. During these times, he began to see how business influenced war.

After his time in the military, Butler's views changed a lot. He became a strong critic of how the U.S. handled foreign policy. He believed that big businesses and bankers were often the reason for war. In 1935, he wrote a book called *War Is a Racket*. He argued that many wars were actually driven by money.

In 1933, he told a congressional committee about a group called the Business Plot. He said wealthy people wanted to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Although the people involved denied it, a special committee confirmed his story. Butler spent his later years speaking for peace at many meetings.
