Most sloops have only one mast. A mast is a tall pole. These boats usually have two sails. One sail is in front of the mast. This is called a headsail. The other sail is behind the mast. This is the mainsail.

Many sloops use a Bermuda rig. This is a common way to set the sails. Some boats also use a gaff rig. A gaff is a pole that holds the top of a sail.

Some sloops have a bowsprit. A bowsprit is a pole that sticks out from the front.

The name comes from a Dutch word. It means to glide. Sloops can be many sizes. Some are small boats for fun. Other sloops are large racing yachts. These big boats use strong winches to pull sails.
