There are many different sizes and types of slipper lobsters. The smallest is the Mediterranean species Scyllarus pygmaeus. It only grows to about 2.5 centimeters long. The largest species is Scyllarides haanii, which can reach 30 centimeters.

They live on the continental shelves at depths up to 200 meters. Most slipper lobsters are edible for humans to eat. In 1991, the global catch was reported to be 15,000 tonnes. Now, annual production is around 20,000 tonnes, mostly in Asia.

During these stages, they are known as phyllosoma larvae. These larvae are planktonic, meaning they drift in the ocean currents, and they look like leaves. This larval stage lasts for most of a year.
