This makes the skis much lighter. In 1922, Thorbjorn Nordby made a waterproof glue. This stopped the wood from splitting. In 1950, Howard Head made a very famous ski. This makes it easier to turn in heavy snow. In 1995, a new movement began with twin-tip skis. These have tips that curve up on both ends. The Salomon Group mass-produced these in 1998. They allow skiers to perform "switch" maneuvers, which means skiing backwards.

Ski history stretches back thousands of years. Skis appeared even before the invention of the wheel. The oldest wooden skis were found in Russia, dating to roughly 6300–5000 BCE. Other ancient skis were found in Sweden around 5200 BCE. In Norway, oldest examples date to 3200 BCE.

In 1922, Thorbjorn Nordby developed a strong waterproof glue. This allowed for much tougher laminated skis. By 1933, a new design encased a light wood core in a hardwood shell. This helped stop the glue lines from splitting.

In 1950, Howard Head changed the industry with the Head Standard. He used a sandwich construction. He placed aluminum alloy around a plywood core. This design was made for recreational users rather than just racers. Later, fiberglass became a common material. In 1962, a fiberglass ski helped a racer win two gold medals. By the late 1960s, fiberglass had mostly replaced aluminum. Another major advancement was the torsion box construction. This method involves wrapping a wooden core in wet fiberglass. This creates a much stronger ski. This technology allowed fiberglass skis to be used in professional racing.

Today, skis use a wide variety of advanced materials. Manufacturers use combinations of fiberglass, steel, aluminum, and plastic. Some high-performance skis use carbon-Kevlar. This makes the skis lighter, stronger, and more resistant to twisting.
