He was born Prince Khao in 1885. He lived in the Golden Palace. His father was King Zakarine. After his father died, Khao became king. He was only 18 years old. He took a new name. This name was Sisavangvong.

He ruled for 55 years. During his time, he brought many lands together. He ruled over places like Vientiane and Champassak. This was the first time in 250 years that one king ruled all of Laos.

Some people wanted Laos to be free from French rule. These people were called the Lao Issara. They did not like that the king helped the French. They took him away from his throne in 1945. But the French returned in 1946. They made him king again.

When he was sick, his son helped rule. His son was named Savang Vatthana. The king died in 1959. People made a university to honor him. There are also statues of him in two cities. The statues show him giving a constitution to the people.
