Siping is a large prefecture-level city located in the western part of Jilin province, China. It sits in the middle of the Songliao Plain, which is a vast area of flat land. The city is situated near the borders of both Liaoning and Inner Mongolia provinces. Geographically, Siping marks a transition zone between different types of terrain. To the northwest, the land is part of the flat Songliao Plain. To the southeast, the landscape shifts into hilly terrain. This location makes it a significant geographic point in the region.

The climate in Siping is described as a humid continental climate, specifically the Dwa type under the Köppen system. This means the region experiences four distinct seasons influenced by monsoons. Winters are long and can last from November through March. During these months, the weather is typically cold, dry, and windy due to the Siberian anticyclone. Summers are the opposite, being hot and humid. This summer weather is driven by the East Asian monsoon, which brings southeasterly winds. Most of the annual rainfall is concentrated between June and August. Despite the long winters, the area is quite bright, receiving 2,684 hours of sunshine annually. The most sunshine occurs during the autumn and winter months.

Siping has a very deep history that stretches back 3,000 years to the Shang dynasty. For many centuries, various ethnic groups moved through and lived in this region. These included the Fuyu, the Goguryeo, the Khitans, the Jurchen, the Mongols, the Manchus, and Koreans. These groups left behind many cultural artifacts, such as the Hanzhou, Xinzhou, and Yehe Tribe artifacts. Yehe Town is particularly notable as the hometown of two Qing dynasty empresses, Empress Dowager Cixi and Empress Dowager Longyu. For much of this time, Siping was not a major center of importance.

Everything changed in 1902 with the completion of a major railway. This line connected Changchun to the port of Dalian. This infrastructure transformed Siping into a regional commercial center. The South Manchuria Railway Company managed the economy here after 1907, leading to steady growth. More railways were added later, including a line to Baicheng in 1923 and a southern line to the Korean Peninsula in 1939. After 1921, a new town called Ssupingkai was built. During the Japanese invasion of Manchuria after 1932, new industries like oil pressing and flour milling emerged. The Japanese also built a refinery to produce synthetic petroleum from coal.

The city also experienced intense conflict during the Chinese Civil War. Between 1945 and 1949, Siping was the site of several major battles between Nationalist and Communist forces. These included the Battle of Siping in March 1946, the Campaign to Defend Siping in 1946, and the Siping Campaign from 1947 to 1948. These wars left the city virtually destroyed. However, after the Communist government was established in 1949, Siping grew rapidly. It eventually became the third largest city in Jilin Province. As of the 2020 census, the total population reached 1,814,733 inhabitants.

Today, Siping is a major economic and industrial hub. In 2015, the city's GDP was 1,266.3 billion RMB, which was a 6.4% increase from the previous year. Its economy relies on several pillar industries. These include pharmaceutical production, chemical manufacturing, and the processing of agricultural products. The city also focuses on electricity and thermal power. The private economy also plays a large role in the industrial sector. Siping is also an important administrative center, managing areas like Lishu County, Yitong Manchu Autonomous County, and Shuangliao City.
