Sioux Falls is a large and busy city in South Dakota. It sits in the eastern part of the state, quite close to the Minnesota border.

The history of this place starts with the river itself. The waterfalls on the Big Sioux River formed about 14,000 years ago. Many Indigenous groups lived in this region first. These included the Sioux, Cheyenne, and many others like the Omaha and Osage. They lived in villages and used the land for farming.
The city has seen many changes over the years. It was officially incorporated as a village in 1876. When the railroads arrived in the 1880s, the city grew very fast. In 1880, there were only 2,164 people living there. By 1889, that number jumped to 10,167 people.
Business and industry helped the city grow again. A large meat packing plant opened in 1909. An airbase and a radio school also opened in 1942.

Sioux Falls is the most populous city in the state of South Dakota. It serves as the county seat for Minnehaha County. The city also extends into the northern part of Lincoln County.
The city's development is closely linked to the Big Sioux River. The river's cascades were formed roughly 14,000 years ago. These falls were created during the last ice age. Many Indigenous groups first inhabited this specific region. These included the Ho-Chunk, Ioway, Otoe, Missouria, Omaha, and Ponca people. Other groups included the Quapaw, Kansa, Osage, Arikara, Sioux, and Cheyenne. These people maintained an agricultural society with fortified villages. Many burial mounds remain on the high bluffs near the river today.
European explorers and settlers arrived much later in the region's history. French voyagers visited the area in the early 18th century. Philander Prescott was the first documented American of European descent to visit. He camped overnight at the falls in December 1832. In 1856, two groups organized to claim the land. These were the Dakota Land Company and the Western Town Company. They saw the site as promising for waterpower and beauty. They even built a temporary turf barricade called "Fort Sod."
The town faced several periods of intense change and conflict. During the Dakota War of 1862, the town was evacuated. Settlers and soldiers traveled to Yankton in late August of that year. The abandoned townsite was eventually pillaged and burned. Later, Fort Dakota was established as a military reservation in 1865. The arrival of railroads caused a massive boom in the 1880s. The population rose from 2,164 in 1880 to 10,167 by 1889. However, a grasshopper plague and a depression slowed growth in the 1890s.
Sioux Falls became famous for unique social and economic reasons. In the 1890s, it was known as a "Divorce Colony." This was because the city had very permissive divorce laws. It was easily accessible to people by rail. Economic prosperity returned through various industrial developments. The John Morrell meat packing plant opened in 1909. An airbase and radio training school opened in 1942.
The city's population has seen significant growth in recent decades. The 2020 census recorded 192,517 residents. City officials estimate the population reached 224,676 by early 2026. The Sioux Falls metropolitan area includes four South Dakota counties. It also includes one county in Minnesota named Rock County. This metropolitan area holds about 308,000 residents. This accounts for more than one-third of South Dakota's total population. The economy has transformed from industrial work to health care and finance.
The climate in Sioux Falls is classified as humid continental. This means the area has hot, humid summers. It also experiences cold, dry winters.
