The city's economy relies on several major sectors. The state and U.S. governments are primary employers because Lincoln is the seat of government. The University of Nebraska is another massive employer. It was founded in 1869 and is the largest university in the state. It currently has 23,954 students enrolled. This university is the third-largest employer in the city. Other major industries include service and manufacturing. There is also a growing high-tech sector. Before settlers arrived, the landscape was a prairie covered in buffalo grass. Indigenous peoples occupied this land for thousands of years. Plains Indians lived in and hunted along Salt Creek. The Pawnee people lived in villages along the Platte River. The Great Sioux Nation, including the Lakota, used the area for hunting and skirmishes.

In 1856, the village of Lancaster was founded on salt marshes and arroyos. Settlers were originally attracted to the area because of the abundance of salt. However, the salt trade declined after J. Sterling Morton developed salt mines in Kansas.

Lincoln's identity changed through political decisions in the late 1860s. Nebraska was granted statehood on March 1, 1867. Originally, Omaha was the capital of the Nebraska Territory. The legislature wanted to move the capital south of the Platte River. They wanted the capital to be as far west as possible. A senator tried to stop the move by suggesting the capital be named after Abraham Lincoln. He hoped this would prevent senators from the South from voting for it. The plan failed, and the Removal Act of 1867 was passed. A commission then selected the village of Lancaster for the new capital.

The city's architecture is defined by its state capitol building. The first capitol was a two-story limestone building completed in 1868. A second building by architect William H. Willcox was built in 1888. This building also faced structural issues over time. Construction began on a third capitol in 1922. Architect Bertram G. Goodhue won a national competition to design it. This building was completed in four phases by 1932. It is now the second-tallest capitol building in the United States.

Transportation history helped Lincoln grow into a major hub. The first train arrived in 1870, followed by several other rail lines. This made the city a vital railroad center. As cars became popular, the Detroit-Lincoln-Denver (D-L-D) Highway was established. This route eventually connected Detroit to Denver through six states.

By the year 2000, it was the 12th-largest resettlement site per capita in the country. Many people have settled there from Vietnam, Sudan, and Iraq. They also come from the Middle East, Afghanistan, and the Karen ethnic minority.
