However, the city was badly damaged by air attacks in 1950. About 95 percent of the city was destroyed then. It has since been rebuilt.

Today, the city is a center for light industry.

Many factories work here to make goods. Some plants make paper, cloth, or enamelled ironware. There is even a factory for cosmetics in South Sinuiju. The city also has a shipyard. Instead of building new ships, they often take old ones apart for metal. There are also plants that recycle many different materials. Some of these materials are even banned for recycling in China.

Traveling to Sinuiju is possible in many ways. You can reach it from P'yŏngyang by road, rail, or air.

This growth was linked to a railway bridge built across the Amnok River. The name Sinuiju actually means "New Ŭiju." It is located 11 km south by southwest of the older city of Ŭiju. During the Korean War, the North Korean government briefly moved its capital here. However, the city suffered extreme damage during the conflict. On 7 November 1950, United States Air Force aerial bombardments hit the city. These attacks destroyed approximately 95 percent of Sinuiju. The city has since been rebuilt by the government.

The economy of Sinuiju is centered on light industry and trade. The city contains many different types of manufacturing plants. These include textile mills, paper mills, and an afforestation factory. There is also a plant that produces enamelled ironware. In the area known as South Sinŭiju, there is a cosmetics factory.

The city also operates a shipyard in its southwest harbour. Rather than building new ships, this shipyard primarily dismantles old ones for scrap metal. Additionally, the city hosts recycling plants. These facilities process a wide range of materials, including items banned for recycling in China.

Transportation infrastructure connects Sinuiju to both domestic and international locations. The Sinuiju Ch'ŏngnyŏn Station is a major railway terminus. It is the northern end of the P'yŏngŭi Line from P'yŏngyang.

The city is also linked to Dandong via the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. This bridge is 944 metres long from end to end. Through the Manchuria Railway, the city connects to the Trans-Siberian Railway. For local travel, a trolleybus line runs from the city centre to the station. This line reopened in October 2020 with new vehicles. The city also has an airport with a single turf runway. This runway measures 991 metres by 61 metres.

Agricultural developments are also notable in the surrounding region. In 2026, a large greenhouse complex was completed on Wihwa Island. This project is called the Sinŭiju Combined Greenhouse Farm. It covers an area of approximately 450 hectares. The complex was built on land that had previously suffered from floods in 2024.

This shows how the region manages its land and resources to support food production.

Sinuiju contains various administrative and social structures. The city is divided into 49 tong, which are neighbourhoods, and 9 ri, which are villages. Part of the city is also within the Sinŭiju Special Administrative Region. This region was established in 2002 to experiment with a market economy. The city offers several educational institutions. These include the Sinuiju University of Medicine and the Sinuiju Light Industry University. For recreation, the city has a Ferris wheel overlooking the Yalu River.

Other sites include the Tonggun Pavilion and local hot springs.
