However, the weather in Burma was very hot and wet. The Chinese soldiers did not know how to live in that heat. Many soldiers got very sick from diseases. This made it hard for them to win.

After the fourth fight, both sides stopped. They made a truce, which is a way to stop fighting. They also stopped trading goods for twenty years. This war helped set the border between the two lands. It also helped Burma stay independent.

It pitted the Qing dynasty of China against the Konbaung dynasty of Burma. This war took place between 1765 and 1769. The Qianlong Emperor led the Chinese side during this time. He saw these battles as part of his Ten Great Campaigns. The war was very hard for the Qing forces. It is often called a disastrous frontier war for them.

It also helped ensure that Burma stayed an independent nation.

At the start, the Qing emperor expected a very easy win. He first sent the Green Standard Army from Yunnan. These troops were mostly used to guard the borders. However, many Burmese soldiers were away fighting in Siam.

The Burmese troops that stayed were very experienced in battle. They defeated the first two Chinese invasions at the border. These first fights happened between 1765 and 1767. The conflict then grew into a much larger war. It spread across many different parts of both countries.

The third invasion was a very close call for Burma.

The Chinese sent elite Manchu Bannermen to lead the way. These soldiers marched deep into the center of Burma. They came within just a few days of the capital, Ava.

But the soldiers from northern China faced new problems. The tropical land was very different from what they knew. Lethal diseases like malaria and cholera spread through the ranks. Because of this, the Bannermen were forced to retreat. They lost many soldiers to the heat and sickness.

After that close call, King Hsinbyushin moved his armies. He brought his troops back from Siam to protect Burma. The fourth invasion was the largest one of all.

The Chinese forces became stuck at the border area. They were surrounded by the Burmese military forces. In December 1769, the commanders reached a truce. A truce is an agreement to stop fighting. The Qing kept troops near the border for ten years. They also stopped all trade for twenty years.

This war helped shape the world we see today. It helped set the boundary between China and Myanmar.

For a long time, the border was not clearly marked. Local chiefs in the Shan States used to pay both sides. After the war, the two lands finally found a way to talk again. In 1790, they began a new diplomatic relationship. The Qing thought they had won the conflict. However, the Burmese had successfully defended their home and land.

The Sino-Burmese War was a series of major military conflicts between the Qing dynasty of China and the Konbaung dynasty of Burma (now Myanmar).

These battles occurred between 1765 and 1769. The Qianlong Emperor viewed these struggles as part of his Ten Great Campaigns. While the Emperor sought to expand his influence, the war became a significant challenge for the Qing military. It is often described as a disastrous frontier war for the Qing dynasty.

For Burma, the successful defense of their territory helped ensure their continued independence. The conflict also helped establish the foundation for the modern border between China and Myanmar.

The roots of the conflict lay in a vaguely defined border region.

For many years, local leaders known as sawbwas ruled the Shan States. These chiefs often paid tribute to both the Chinese and the Burmese. In the 1730s, the Qing dynasty began to exert tighter control over the Yunnan borderlands. At the same time, the Burmese Toungoo dynasty was declining due to internal rebellions and external raids. By 1752, the Toungoo dynasty fell, and the Qing control over the border regions became much stronger. This power shift set the stage for a future confrontation when a new Burmese dynasty rose to power.

In the 1750s, the Konbaung dynasty emerged to reunite much of Burma.

King Alaungpaya, the founder of this dynasty, attempted to reestablish Burmese authority in the Shan States. This movement caused tension with the Qing, who had recently annexed those areas. In 1759, the Qing court ordered a reconquest to protect their interests. The first invasion began in 1765 when the Qing sent the Green Standard Army. This force consisted of 3,500 troops and local militias. However, the Burmese troops at the Kengtung garrison were battle-hardened. They defeated the invaders and pursued them back into China.

The second invasion, occurring from 1766 to 1767, was more ambitious.

The Qing commander, Yang Yingju, aimed to strike directly at Upper Burma. He planned to move through Bhamo and down the Irrawaddy River to reach the capital, Ava. The Burmese King Hsinbyushin prepared a clever trap for the advancing forces. He ordered his commander, Balamindin, to hold a fort at Kaungton. This fort was equipped with cannons operated by French gunners. As the Chinese moved into the corridor, they were surrounded by multiple Burmese armies. The Chinese forces were unable to break the encirclement and suffered heavy losses.

The third invasion (1767–1768) involved the elite Manchu Bannermen from northern China.

These soldiers were highly trained, and they managed to penetrate deep into central Burma. They came within only a few days of marching into the capital, Ava. However, the Bannermen were not prepared for the tropical environment. They struggled with unfamiliar terrain and lethal endemic diseases. Many soldiers died from illnesses such as cholera, dysentery, and malaria. One report noted that 800 out of 1,000 soldiers in one garrison died from disease. These heavy losses forced the elite troops to retreat.

The fourth and largest invasion saw the Qing forces become stuck at the frontier.

King Hsinbyushin had redeployed his main armies from Siam to face the Chinese threat. The Burmese military successfully encircled the Qing forces. Because neither side could achieve a total victory, the field commanders reached a truce in December 1769. Following the war, the Qing kept a large military presence in Yunnan for about ten years. They also imposed a ban on inter-border trade that lasted for two decades. The Burmese also maintained military garrisons along the border to ensure their security.

The long-term effects of the war were significant for the region.

In 1790, Burma and China resumed diplomatic relations. The Qing government viewed this resumption as a sign of Burmese submission and claimed victory. However, the war had already shaped the political landscape. The Siamese, who were fighting the Burmese in Siam at the time, benefited from the distraction. They were able to reclaim most of their lost territories within three years. Ultimately, the war solidified the boundaries and the independent status of the Konbaung dynasty.
