The physical geography of Sinaloa is defined by three main features. The Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range dominates the eastern region.

Between these mountains and the Gulf lies a broad coastal plain. This plain is a narrow strip of land running the length of the state. Many rivers flow from the mountains toward the sea. These include the Fuerte, Culiacán, Sinaloa, Baluarte, Tamazula, and Humaya rivers.

These rivers create fertile valleys and support unique ecoregions. These include the Sinaloan dry forests and the Sonoran–Sinaloan transition subtropical dry forests.

Sinaloa's climate varies significantly based on elevation. The coastal plains experience a warm, subtropical or tropical climate. In the valleys and foothills, the weather is moderately warm. The lower mountains have a moderately cold climate. The highest elevations are quite cold.

The history of the region began with many indigenous groups. These included the Cahitas, Tahues, Acaxees, Xiximes, Totorames, Achires, and Guasaves. In 1531, Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán established a Spanish outpost at San Miguel de Culiacán.

This era brought significant changes and depopulation due to new diseases. Later, Jesuit missionaries began spreading through the area in 1599.

This success is due to extensive irrigation projects. Large dams like the Sanalona, Miguel Hidalgo, and Humaya were built to convert arid land into farmland. These projects support the large-scale production of wheat, rice, and tomatoes. The economy is built on agriculture, fisheries, livestock breeding, and mining.

To address this, the federal government launched Operation Sinaloa in 2008. This involved deploying military and police forces to the region. The state has experienced cycles of violence, such as the Battle of Culiacán in 2019. Ongoing conflicts within criminal organizations continue to cause instability in some parts of the state. Despite these challenges, Sinaloa remains a vital center for Mexican agriculture and culture.
