Simferopol is a large and busy city on the Crimean Peninsula.

This place has a very long and layered history. Long ago, ancient Scythian people lived in this area. Later, the Crimean Tatars founded a town called Aqmescit. In their language, this name means "the Western Mosque." The modern city was founded in 1784 by the Russian Empire. The name Simferopol comes from the Greek words for "the city of usefulness."
Simferopol has faced many difficult times during wars. During World War II, German forces occupied the city for several years. This was a very sad time when many local people were killed. In 1944, the Crimean Tatar people were forcibly moved away from their homes. They were sent to Central Asia as a form of punishment. Many of these families were finally able to return to the city in the 1990s. Today, many Crimean Tatars live in new suburbs built for them.
Traveling through Simferopol is very easy because it is a major hub.
Today, the city is a center for learning and work. It has many large schools and the biggest university in Crimea. The Taurida V. Vernadsky National University was started way back in 1917. There are also many factories that make things like tools and electronics. Many people live in the city, with most being ethnic Russians. Others include Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar minorities. It remains an important place for politics and trade in the region.
Simferopol is a major city located on the south-central part of the Crimean Peninsula.
The geography of the area is shaped by water and a specific climate. The city sits on the Salhir River near the Simferopol Reservoir. This reservoir provides clean drinking water to the local population. Notably, the earth dam of the reservoir is the largest in Europe.
Simferopol has a deep history involving many different cultures. Archaeological evidence shows that ancient people lived on this territory long ago. The Scythian Neapolis was once located here. This was the ancient capital for the Crimean Scythians from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD. Later, the Crimean Tatars established a town called Aqmescit. In the Crimean Tatar language, this name means "the Western Mosque." The word "white" in their Turkic language designation refers to the west. This area is now known as Old Simferopol.
The modern city was founded in 1784 by the Russian Empire. This occurred after the annexation of the Crimean Khanate by Catherine II. The name Simferopol is derived from the Greek word Sympheropoli. This translates literally to "the city of usefulness."
The 20th century brought many periods of conflict and political change. During the Russian Civil War, the city held the headquarters for General Pyotr Wrangel. In 1921, Simferopol became the capital of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. During World War II, Nazi Germany occupied the city from 1941 to 1944. This occupation was a period of great hardship and loss of life. In 1944, the Red Army liberated the city. That same year, the Crimean Tatar population was forcibly deported to Central Asia. They were moved as collective punishment for perceived collaboration with Nazi forces.
Political shifts continued throughout the Soviet and post-Soviet eras. In 1954, the city was transferred from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Simferopol became the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea within independent Ukraine. In 2014, Russia annexed the peninsula. Since then, Simferopol has been named the capital of a new federal subject of the Russian Federation. The city's population was 338,319 at the 2014 census. Most residents are ethnic Russians, with Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar minorities.
Transportation is a key feature of life in Simferopol.
Finally, Simferopol is a center for education and industry. It hosts the largest collection of higher education institutions in Crimea. This includes the Taurida V. Vernadsky National University, founded in 1917. The city is also home to the Crimea State Medical University. Many industrial plants operate here, producing power tools, chemicals, and electronics. The "Digital Valley" is a planned silicon industry hub near the airport. This makes the city an important site for both traditional manufacturing and modern technology.
