Silas was a leader in the early Christian community. He lived a long time ago. He had many different names. Some people called him Silvanus. That name means "of the forest."

Silas went on a big trip with Paul. This was a mission to share their faith. They traveled to many new places. One time, they were put in prison in a city called Philippi. An earthquake happened while they were there. The shaking broke their chains and opened the prison door.

Silas also traveled with a man named Timothy. They visited cities like Thessalonica and Corinth. In some places, people were not kind to them. This caused Paul to travel alone for a short time. Later, Silas and Timothy joined him again.

Some books in the Bible list Silas as a writer. He is also called a "faithful brother" in a letter from Peter. Many churches honor him today. Some celebrate him in January. Others celebrate him in July.
