Physicians at the NVA's Institute for Aviation Medicine monitored their health closely for two years.
On August 26, 1978, Jähn began his mission aboard the Soyuz 31. He flew with co-pilot Valery Bykovsky toward the Salyut 6 space station. They were met by resident cosmonauts Vladimir Kovalyonok and Aleksandr Ivanchenkov. Jähn’s mission lasted 7 days, 20 hours, 49 minutes, and 4 seconds. During this time, he orbited the Earth 124 times.
Jähn performed many complex scientific experiments while in orbit. He used the MKF-6 multispectral camera for remote sensing of Earth's surface. He also studied material science, specifically how crystals form and grow in weightlessness. Jähn conducted medical experiments to see how weightlessness affects human speech. He performed occupational psychological studies and tested hearing sensitivity. He even studied biological processes, such as how microorganisms interact with organic polymers.
Returning to Earth proved to be a dangerous moment. As the Soyuz 31 capsule approached the ground, a gust of wind occurred. This wind thrust the capsule back into the air. The craft then hit the ground with increased momentum. Jähn could not reach the parachute-release switch in time. He was dragged across the steppes as the capsule rolled several times. This accident caused permanent injuries to his spinal cord. 
Despite the rough landing, the mission was a massive success for the GDR. The media covered the event extensively. The newspaper *Neues Deutschland* ran a special edition with a major headline. Jähn was awarded the Hero of the GDR and the Hero of the Soviet Union in 1981. 
Jähn continued his contributions to science after his flight. He earned a doctorate in science in 1983. His thesis focused on the remote sensing of the Earth. He later worked for the European Space Agency (ESA). He assisted with projects involving the Russian agency, Roscosmos. He retired in 2002. Jähn passed away on September 21, 2019. He was the last living East German to hold the title of Hero of the GDR.
