Sigismund II Augustus was a major political figure in Eastern Europe. He served as the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania.

His reign is often called the apex of the Polish Golden Age. This was a period when culture and art flourished across his lands. He was also the final male monarch of the Jagiellonian dynasty. This long-standing royal family had ruled for many generations. When he died, his family line ended.

Sigismund was born in Kraków on August 1, 1520. His father was Sigismund I the Old, and his mother was Bona Sforza of Milan. Because he was the only surviving male heir, his education was very intense. Renowned scholars taught him to prepare for leadership. His mother wanted to name him Augustus after the first Roman Emperor. His father disagreed and wanted to keep the name Sigismund. To settle the dispute, the boy was given both names.

Sigismund began his rise to power through a process called vivente rege. This is a Latin term meaning "while the king is living." In 1529, he was chosen as king while his father was still on the throne.

He was inaugurated as Grand Duke of Lithuania in Vilnius that same year. By 1530, at only nine years old, he was officially crowned. This early selection helped prevent political arguments among the nobility. They feared that a sudden change in leadership might lead to absolute power for the crown.

His personal life was marked by significant struggle and three different marriages. His first marriage was to Elizabeth of Austria in 1543.

This union was arranged by political leaders but faced opposition from his mother. Elizabeth was a very quiet and timid person. She suffered from epilepsy, which included sudden seizures. She died in 1545 at the age of 18. Sigismund's relationship with her was difficult, as he often felt indifferent to her health struggles.

After Elizabeth, Sigismund fell in love with Barbara Radziwiłł. This relationship caused a massive political crisis. The nobility and the King's mother, Bona Sforza, strongly opposed the marriage. Many nobles even threatened to leave their allegiance to the king. Sigismund eventually married her in secret and she was crowned Queen in 1550.

Sadly, Barbara died only five months after her coronation. Historians believe she died from cancer, though some people at the time suspected poisoning. Sigismund was so heartbroken that he dressed in black for the rest of his life.

Sigismund's third marriage was to Catherine of Austria. However, this marriage did not produce any living children. This lack of an heir meant the Jagiellonian dynasty would not continue through a male line. Despite these personal losses, his political work changed the map of Europe. In 1569, he oversaw the signing of the Union of Lublin.

This agreement joined Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania together. The new state was called the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. This union also introduced an elective monarchy, where leaders were chosen by the nobility.

Sigismund left behind a very organized and cultured kingdom. He established the first regular Polish navy to protect trade. He also created the first regular postal service, which is known today as Poczta Polska.
