For many years, Anna did not marry anyone. Many men asked to marry her, but it did not happen. Her brother was Sigismund II Augustus. When he died in 1572, things changed for Anna. She became the heiress of the Jagiellon family. This meant she was a very important link to the throne.

Some people tried to use her name to claim power. In 1573, she supported Henry de Valois. He was elected as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. However, Henry did not marry her as he had promised. This was a very sad and difficult time for Anna.

Eventually, a new plan was made to help the country. A man named Stephen Báthory was chosen to be king. Because laws did not allow an unmarried woman to rule alone, they decided they should rule together.

On 15 December 1575, they were elected as co-rulers. They were married and crowned at Wawel Cathedral on 1 May 1576. This was a very big event for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Even though they were rulers, their marriage was quite formal and distant. Stephen Báthory spent much of his time away at the Livonian War.

While her husband was away, Anna worked very hard on her own. She used her money to finish many large building projects. She helped finish the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. She also worked on Ujazdów Castle. One of her biggest projects was the Sigismund Augustus Bridge. It was a very long wooden bridge over the Vistula River. It was 500 meters long, which was huge for that time. She even built a city wall called Stara Prochownia to protect the bridge from fire.

Stephen Báthory died in December 1586. This left Anna with a very big choice to make. She could have stayed on the throne as the sole ruler. Instead, she chose to help her nephew, Sigismund III Vasa.

Anna Jagiellon was a powerful political figure in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

She served as Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania from 1575 to 1587. Her life was defined by her role in maintaining the Jagiellonian dynasty. This dynasty was the royal family that had ruled for a long time. When her brother died without a male heir, Anna became a central figure in European politics. Her status as a dynastic heiress made her a key player in choosing future leaders.

Anna was born on 18 October 1523 in Kraków. Her father was King Sigismund I the Old, and her mother was the Italian Duchess Bona Sforza. She grew up with her sisters, Sophia and Catherine, receiving a high-level education. Anna became well-versed in architecture and financial management. She was also fluent in Latin and Italian. In her leisure time, she practiced embroidery and sewing.

She also enjoyed playing chess and dice, and she participated in various works of charity.

For much of her life, Anna remained unmarried. Many marriage proposals were made to her, but they often failed for various reasons. Some candidates had bad tempers or significant debts. Others were not suitable because of religious differences or political conflicts. For example, a Danish prince was considered, but he was a Lutheran. This was difficult because the majority of the Kingdom was Catholic. In 1562, a marriage was arranged between her sister Catherine and John, Duke of Finland. This was done to secure Swedish troops and money for the Livonian War.

Everything changed in July 1572 when her brother, Sigismund II Augustus, died. This left the throne vacant, an event known as an interregnum. Anna transitioned from a private citizen to the heiress of the Jagiellon dynasty.

She initially supported Henry de Valois, a French prince, for the throne. Henry promised to marry Anna to maintain the dynastic tradition. However, he did not follow through on this promise. He left Poland in 1574 to become King of France. This left Anna in a difficult and humiliating political position.

During the second interregnum, Anna took the title of Infanta. This title reflected her high dynastic status, similar to customs in Spain. In December 1575, a new plan was proposed by diplomat Jan Zamoyski. Since laws prevented an unmarried woman from ruling alone, Stephen Báthory was proposed as her husband.

On 15 December 1575, Anna and Báthory were elected as co-rulers. They were married and crowned at Wawel Cathedral on 1 May 1576. While they ruled together, their marriage was largely a formal and distant arrangement.

As Queen, Anna managed significant financial and construction responsibilities. She received a large income from the Wieliczka Salt Mine and other properties. She used these funds to supervise several major projects. She completed the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw and Ujazdów Castle. One of her most notable achievements was the Sigismund Augustus Bridge. This was a wooden bridge over the Vistula River that measured 500 meters in length. To protect this bridge from fire, she built a city wall known as Stara Prochownia.

After Stephen Báthory died in December 1586, Anna faced a major decision. She had the opportunity to remain on the throne as the sole ruler. Instead, she chose to promote her nephew, Sigismund III Vasa.

Her decision helped establish the House of Vasa on the throne. This new dynasty would rule the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for the next 80 years, from 1587 to 1668. Anna died on 9 September 1596, leaving a legacy of architectural development and political transition.
