Sigismund I was a powerful ruler who led a large part of Europe.

Sigismund had to work hard to find his place in the world. At first, he did not have any land or titles of his own. His brother Vladislaus II helped him by giving him some smaller lands.

As a king, Sigismund worked to make his country strong and wealthy. He helped expand his borders by taking over Ducal Prussia and Mazovia. He also made sure that leaders in Prussia showed him respect. Sigismund used his army to protect the eastern edges of his land. In 1531, his commander Jan Amor Tarnowski defeated Moldavia at Obertyn. In 1535, he also defeated Muscovy to keep his borders safe. He even created a new army and a way to pay for it in 1527. These actions helped keep the nation stable for many years.
Life in the kingdom changed a lot during his long reign.

Even great kings face hard times and disagreements. In 1537, some nobles held a revolt known as the Chicken War.
Sigismund I the Old was a significant monarch who ruled as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.
Sigismund’s path to power was not immediate or easy. After his father died in 1492, he held no titles or land. He spent several years petitioning his brother, Alexander I, for territory.
During his 42-year reign, Sigismund focused on expanding and securing his borders. He established Polish rule over Ducal Prussia and annexed the Duchy of Mazovia, including Warsaw. He required the Duke of Prussia, Albert, to pay feudal homage as a sign of political dependence. To protect the eastern frontiers, Sigismund utilized military commanders like Jan Amor Tarnowski. They defeated Moldavia at Obertyn in 1531 and Muscovy in 1535. These victories helped stabilize the nation's edges during a period of regional tension.
Sigismund also managed complex relationships with the Polish nobility. He governed under the law of Nihil novi, which prevented kings from making laws without the Sejm, or parliament. While he was sometimes reluctant to share power, he respected legal norms and summoned annual Sejm sessions. In 1527, he established a permanent conscript army and the bureaucracy needed to fund it. However, he faced domestic resistance, such as the 1537 revolt known as the Chicken War.
Economic and legal reforms were central to his administration. Sigismund worked to separate public tax accounts from the royal treasury and strengthened the Kraków mint. He also attempted to organize income from salt mines to increase state wealth. To improve the judicial system, he issued statutes, such as one for the Armenians in 1519. Between 1530 and 1538, he established rules for the election of future monarchs. These laws ensured the election was free and allowed all social groups to observe the process.
Cultural growth flourished under Sigismund, largely due to his second wife, Bona Sforza.

Sigismund’s reign was not without conflict, particularly with the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Tensions escalated when Muscovite forces besieged the trading center of Smolensk in 1513.
