The Sidama Region is a beautiful place in southern Ethiopia. It is a special area that has its own local government. The region was formed on 18 June 2020. Before this, it was part of a larger area called the SNNPR. The people of Sidama voted for this change in a 2019 referendum. Almost everyone who voted, about 98.52%, said yes to having more control over their own land.

Geography in Sidama is very interesting because the land changes a lot. The region sits in a cone-shaped area in the middle of southern Ethiopia. It is near Lake Hawassa and Lake Abaya. The Bilate River sits on the western side of the region. The land can be flat and hot, or it can be high and cold. About 16% of the area is in the cool mountains. These high places get the most rain in the region.

History shows that the Sidama people have had their own ways of leading for a long time. They used an indigenous political system. In this system, a leader called the _Motta_ was chosen by family and relatives. This leader was like a king. The leader was presented to the people during the Sidama New Year ceremony. The _Motta_ was the head of the whole political structure. He was helped by an assistant who held a lot of power too.

Many people live in this region, with about 3.2 million people in 2017. Most of these people are Sidama and speak the Sidama language. Hawassa is a very important city and serves as the capital. The region is divided into four main zones. These zones include Central Sidama, Eastern Sidama, Northern Sidama, and Southern Sidama. Many people live in towns like Yirgalem, Bona, and Bensa.

The Sidama Region is a regional state located in southern Ethiopia. It is the second smallest regional state in the country, following Harari. The name Sidama refers to the Sidama people, their language, and the territory itself. This region was officially formed on 18 June 2020. It was created from the former Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR). The change happened after a 2019 referendum. In that vote, 98.52% of people favored increased autonomy for the Sidama people.

The geography of Sidama is shaped like a cone in southern Ethiopia. It sits northeast of Lake Abaya and southeast of Lake Hawassa. The Bilate River forms the western border, separating Sidama from the Wolayita Zone. To the north and east, the region is bordered by the Oromia Region. In the south, it also borders Oromia, except for a short stretch near the Gedeo zone. The total area is 10,000 square kilometers. About 97.71% of this area is land, while 2.29% is water.

Sidama has many different climatic zones based on elevation. The largest zone is the temperate Gamoojje, or Woinadega, which covers 54% of the area. This zone sits between 1,500 and 2,500 meters above sea level. It has an average temperature between 15 °C and 19.9 °C. The hot Kolla zone covers 30% of the region. It sits at lower elevations between 500 and 1,500 meters. The cool Aliicho, or Dega, zone covers the mountainous highlands. This zone makes up 16% of the area and reaches heights of 3,500 meters.

Historically, the Sidama people used an indigenous political system. A leader known as the Motta acted as a king. Family and relatives nominated the Motta for this position. The leader was presented to the community during the Sidama New Year ceremony. The Motta headed the political and administrative structure. An assistant helped the Motta with administrative authority. After the fall of the Derg military regime, the Sidama people could widely use their local language, Sidaamu Afoo.

The population of Sidama was approximately 3.2 million in 2017. Most inhabitants, about 93.01% according to 2007 census data, are Sidama. The Sidama language is the primary tongue for 94.23% of the people. Hawassa serves as the capital city of the region. The region is divided into four administrative zones: Central, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Sidama. Hawassa is also a major urban center. The city has its own sub-cities, such as Hayk Dar and Mehal.

The economy relies heavily on subsistence agriculture. Many residents grow food primarily to feed their own families. Cattle are also a very important measure of wealth for people here. Sidama is a major center for coffee production in Ethiopia. It supplies more than 40% of the washed coffee to the central market. Coffee is a vital export that brings foreign exchange to the country.
