Sicily is a large island located in the central Mediterranean Sea.

The island's physical landscape is defined by diverse features. One of the most prominent landmarks is Mount Etna.
Human activity on the island began a very long time ago. The earliest archaeological records date back to around 14,000 BC. People associated with the Epigravettian culture first colonized the area during the Late Pleistocene. Later, distinct groups shaped the early identity of the island. The Sicani were among the earliest inhabitants. They may have arrived from the Iberian Peninsula. The Elymians arrived next and settled in the northwest. Finally, the Sicels arrived from mainland Italy around 1200 BC. These people moved the Sicanians toward the center of the island. The island's name, Sicily, actually comes from these Sicel people.
Ancient history in Sicily was defined by powerful Mediterranean civilizations. By 750 BC, Greeks established many colonies along the coast. These settlements became part of Magna Graecia. Syracuse was one of the most significant Greek colonies.

After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, power shifted frequently. The island saw rule by the Vandals and the Ostrogoths. The Byzantine Empire also controlled Sicily for a time.
The path to modern Italy involved significant political changes. In 1816, the kingdom joined with Naples to form the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi led an invasion known as the Expedition of the Thousand.
Sicily remains a place of immense cultural and historical significance. Its history is visible in many archaeological sites. You can explore the ruins of the Phoenician city of Motya.
