For a long time, people thought they were storks. However, DNA studies from 2008 show they are part of the Pelecaniformes group. This group includes pelicans and herons. Its most striking feature is an enormous, bulbous bill shaped like a shoe. This bill is pinkish with irregular grey markings. The upper part of the bill, called the culmen, can reach 15 centimeters in length. This makes it the third-longest bill among all living birds, trailing only pelicans and large storks. The bill is strongly keeled and ends in a sharp nail. This specialized anatomy helps the bird capture large prey in its wetland home.

Physically, the shoebill is a tall and heavy bird. Adults typically stand around 110 to 140 centimeters tall. Their length from tail to beak can reach up to 150 centimeters. They have a wingspan that can extend to 250 centimeters. While weights vary, males are generally larger than females. Adults possess blue-grey plumage with darker slaty-grey flight feathers. For many years, scientists debated the shoebill's place in the biological tree of life. They were traditionally classified as storks in the order Ciconiiformes. However, modern research has shifted this understanding. In 1957, Patricia Cottam used osteological evidence, which is the study of bones, to suggest a link to the Pelecaniformes group. In 1995, Konstantin Mikhailov performed a microscopic analysis of eggshells. He found that shoebill eggshells have a thick layer of microglobular material, just like pelicans and herons. A 2008 DNA study finally confirmed that shoebills belong to the Pelecaniformes order. This means they are more closely related to pelicans and herons than to true storks.

History shows that humans have observed the shoebill for centuries. While Ancient Egyptians may have known of them, Europeans did not formally classify the bird until the 19th century. Because they are solitary, shoebills usually forage far apart from one another, even in crowded areas.

Reproduction for the shoebill is a solitary and careful process. Unlike many other wading birds that live in large colonies, shoebills are very isolated. A breeding pair will vigorously defend a territory of about 1 square kilometer. They build large, flat nests out of aquatic vegetation on floating platforms. These nests can be up to 50 centimeters deep in water. Both parents share the duties of brooding and feeding the chicks. To manage heat, parents use their bills to carry water to the eggs.
