The region must also manage natural risks. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit the area in 2011. History suggests large earthquakes occur here every 100 to 150 years.

Shizuoka has a deep and complex history. It was originally formed from three provinces. These were Tōtōmi, Suruga, and Izu.

The area was home to the first Tokugawa shōgun. Tokugawa Ieyasu held the region for many years. He eventually conquered the Hōjō clan in the Kantō region. He placed land under the stewardship of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Later, Tokugawa took the land back for his own family. He put the area near modern-day Shizuoka City under direct shogunate supervision. In 1868, the Shizuoka han was created from the Sunpu Domain. This made the area the residence of the Tokugawa family once again.

Today, Shizuoka is a major center for people and industry. The 2020 census recorded a population of 3,635,220 people.

The prefecture is organized into 35 municipalities. These consist of 23 cities and 12 towns. This is a result of several mergers. In 1889, there were 337 municipalities. The Great Shōwa mergers in the 1950s reduced this number significantly. Then, the Great Heisei mergers in the 2000s combined the remaining towns into the current structure. Shizuoka is also a leader in manufacturing. It accounts for 28% of all Japanese motorcycle exports.

Industry in Shizuoka is world-renowned. Several global companies have their roots here. Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha all began in this prefecture.

The region is also a global leader in musical instruments. About 200 companies manufacture instruments in Shizuoka. Many of these are located in Hamamatsu City. Yamaha holds the largest share of the global piano market. Kawai holds the second largest share. Roland and Kawai are also major players in electronic instruments. Roland and Yamaha produce high-quality synthesizers and drum machines. This industrial strength makes the region vital to the global economy.

Transportation and tourism connect Shizuoka to the rest of Japan. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen is a major high-speed rail line.
