Chern's academic journey began in China. He was born in Xiushui, Jiaxing, in 1911. He studied at Nankai University, where he was mentored by Jiang Lifu. He also learned from the physicist Rao Yutai. Later, he moved to Tsinghua University in Beijing. At Tsinghua, he studied projective differential geometry under Sun Guangyuan. In 1934, Chern earned a master's degree in mathematics. This was the first master's degree in mathematics ever issued in China. During this time, he was also a teacher to the famous physicist Chen-Ning Yang.
In the mid-1930s, Chern traveled to Europe to deepen his studies. He received a scholarship to study in Germany at the University of Hamburg. There, he worked under the guidance of the geometer Wilhelm Blaschke. He focused on the geometry of webs and invariant theory. He earned his Doctor of Science degree in February 1936. After Germany, Chern moved to France to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. He met the influential mathematician Élie-Joseph Cartan there. Chern worked very hard to keep up with Cartan's complex ideas. This period of intense study helped shape his future research.
World War II created significant challenges for Chern's career. When war broke out in 1937, he returned to China to teach at Tsinghua. The conflict forced universities to relocate to Kunming in Yunnan province. This temporary group of schools was called the National Southwestern Associated University. Because of the war, Chern was often isolated from the global math community. However, he continued to study and publish his research. In 1943, his work gained international attention. This led to an invitation from Oswald Veblen to join the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. 
Chern spent many years in prestigious academic positions in the United States. He worked at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1943 to 1945. Later, he served as a professor and chair of geometry at the University of Chicago. In 1960, he moved to the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he cofounded the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in 1982. He served as its founding director. His work helped make the United States a leading center for geometric research. He was also elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1961.
Throughout his life, Chern received many high honors. He won the Wolf Prize and the inaugural Shaw Prize. In 2010, the International Mathematical Union established the Chern Medal to honor outstanding achievements in mathematics. Despite these massive honors, Chern remained a modest man. He often said he preferred to focus on "small problems" rather than "big views." He also acted as a bridge between the East and the West. He visited China 25 times, meeting with many important leaders. His legacy lives on through the many students he taught and the theorems that still guide scientists today.
